We need the East-West Rail as well, debate is chiefly about route and specification designs, in a context of growth and development. If a new town is to be built in East Beds/West Cambs of circa 150, 000 homes, they must have a rail infrastructure and build-in freight by rail links between ECML and EWRL, if not you throw away scope and potential. Meanwhile, end-to-end traffic into Cambridge joins already long tailbacks and 25 years worth of congestion gridlock worsening. Park and Ride costs, buses get caught in congestion. Only heavy rail and light rail solutions working together can offer a real modal choice for real modal shift and reducing emissions. The problems repeat x nationwide of course because the closures and failure to protect former rail corridors has exacerbated the challenge, cost and pontification of power and resource providers, on whether to continue with unsustainable status quos or change tracks from roads-based solutions which do not achieve badly needed goals and sustainable transport for people and goods, namely heavy rail.
