Jessica Sutter, Chief of Civic Learning Initiatives, led a roundtable with two college students to find out. Trenton Eilander, a student at the University of Iowa and Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute Fellow, shares with Jessica that political leaders can better model civility and optimism. The greatest threat facing American democracy today is the disengagement and disinterest of its citizenry. Why? Because democratic institutions, and the many freedoms they bestow, depend upon the extent to which citizens place their trust in them. Yet there is considerable evidence, such as in the poll linked below, that a growing number of people lack basic knowledge of government and its institutions. Therein lies the problem: how can we expect our fellow citizens to place their trust in, much less fight for the preservation of, a democracy they are unfamiliar with?

#SHARE. PBS SoCal has a wonderful website that teaches civics! High school civics education teaches students how to participate in democracy and be informed citizens. Students learn about the structure and function of government, how to find accurate information, and how to communicate with officials. They also learn about the issues that divide the country and how to take a position on controversial topics. #SPMGMedia https://lnkd.in/gci9tqE3

Assistant Victim/Witness Coordinator at State of Tennessee - Knowing justice can introduce us to peace. Whether we become friends with justice and peace is a daily decision.
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka: The one where the United States Supreme Court used the law to recognize the universal truth that all men (including those enslaved) are created equal. Brown overruled the “separate but equal” principal which was cited by Justice B. Taney as originating from the Constitutional truth that black people were not included in the US Constitution as citizens. Ironically, although the logic was legally sound that established the precendent in Plessy v. Ferguson it was inherently wrong, because the underlying premise - that slaves should not be citizens - is wrong. Why? The repulsive word “slaves” is the rickety table upon which the logical house of cards is built. The fact that the USSC overturned diabolical but sound logical precedent by overriding the principals of federalism forcing the states to integrate schools will always be simply beautiful to me. However, it was only the beginning of the push back and we won’t even talk about the “with all deliberate speed” part. Today, we celebrate the enormous impact Brown had on our collective consciousness. 💪🏽
Linda Brown, a young African American girl, tried to enroll at an all-white elementary school in Topeka just a few blocks from her family's home. She was denied admission because of the color of her skin. #OTD in 1954, a historic Supreme Court decision was made. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka ruled that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. Today, #TheMarchContinues.
