As a former San Franciscan myself I am hearing from many friends who live there that the neighborhoods in San Francisco are still very alive and vibrant but the Financial District is still very challenged and depleted. On recent trips I have seen this for myself. Indeed city leadership needs lot of help. AI may not be the end-all solution because staffing/personnel in AI firms is much less than in traditional tech upon which San Francisco’s recent booms were built. The young tech population that came with these booms may not be as prevalent in the future of San Francisco with AI so there must be more reliance upon a rebuild of San Francisco’s Financial District focusing more on diversification than upon one tech business model. This one-model approach has helped produce the boom/bust cycle San Francisco endures every 20 years or so. Diversification is key.

While I concur with the general sentiment of this post, San Francisco’s biggest “problem” stems from ineptitude of local governance. Much like the situation at the federal level, the elections in November will have a big influence on the trajectory (and slope) of SF’s “recovery curve”. Personally, the situation at the federal level feels more dire given the current choices, but I’m optimistic SF government will focus more on actually cleaning up the city and incentivizing businesses to come back so SF can experience it’s Xth boom cycle. It will be influenced by many factors (including the overall US + global economy), but SF definitely feels like it’s “ready” to become truly vibrant again.
