Latin America: The evaluation of this sustainable consumption initiative “Driving sustainable consumption in Latin America with better product information and design” (ICSAL) funded by the EC, found that ICSAL was instrumental in its support for establishing of a regional ecolabel scheme through the Environmental Alliance of America. ICSAL was a frontrunner for the recognition of a regional ecolabel in the LAC region with the Environmental Alliance of America attracting interest from more countries and maintaining and further strengthening the contacts and network stakeholders in the region. From being a rather small group of people having the required skills and knowledge within the focus countries, it was possible through ICSAL to train and build the capacity of a larger group of people, assess and develop technical standards and norms for ecolabeling both nationally and in relation to the regional ecolabel and provide technical assistance on certification process, sustainable design, production and information campaigns to companies and retailers. A lesson from the evaluation was that certification (ecolabeling) needs to be based on a marketing/market assessment to create incentives for companies.
