This quote from Dr Haydon Mort of Geologize LTD. may not be the first time you will have heard this and won't be the last; most of us at some point have asked the same question. Haydon says this in his #Practical #Geocommunication course while discussing responsible social media methods for Geoscience communication. The section deals with Increasing Engagement and Retention of your audience. It is reflective and sincere, and is the example we could all be instilling in our mentees for all subjects - not just science. As scientists, we should all be trying to reduce the collective ignorance of society to the importance of science by increasing our interactions with our surrounding communities. If you are not willing or able, find someone who is and fund them!
