Meet Dr. Amy Hajari Case, our Senior Medical Advisor for Education and Awareness! This March for Women’s History Month, let’s shine a spotlight on the women of the PFF Medical Team. === 🔹 What is your title? Director, ILD Program, Piedmont Healthcare - and - Senior Medical Advisor for Education and Awareness, PFF 🔹 What inspired you to become a pulmonologist? When I was a resident in internal medicine, I really enjoyed critical care medicine, which led me to pursue a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine, because in most programs the training is combined. The more exposure I had to pulmonary medicine, I found that I also liked taking care of patients with pulmonary illnesses, from acute problems like pneumonia and pulmonary embolism, to chronic ones like pulmonary fibrosis. 🔹 Can you share a particularly rewarding or impactful moment in your career that stands out to you? I had an incredibly supportive mentor in fellowship, Dr. Joao de Andrade, who not only taught me how to care for patients with PF, but he also taught me a lot about clinical trials and what it takes to run an ILD program. Over a decade later, I still call on him when I need advice! 🔹 If you could share one piece of advice to the PF community, what would it be? Remember: you are not alone. There are lots of ways to find community, including support groups, pulmonary rehabilitation, and volunteering. Being diagnosed with PF can be scary, but there's someone out there who knows the road you're walking — just reach out so you can find them!

Discharge from the hospital It took some time but the publication 'Help, I May Have to Go Home...' Leaving the Hospital Not Too Early and Not Too Late: Optimising the Discharge Process is online https://lnkd.in/e8N9hwnm Discharge from a hospital is a complex matter. Just as in hotels where check-out is the last part of the guest journey, discharge from hospital is crucial for image building, among other things. Improving the hospital discharge process contributes to a better patient experience and quality of life, word of mouth, efficiency and costs for the hospital. Together with (then) hotel school student Inge van Son, Onno Guicherit, surgical oncologist, medical director of the cancer center Haaglanden Medical Center, and myself, this research was conducted and this article was created with the result: Improving hospital discharge with check-out procedures from the hotel industry. Moreover, through this research, Inge became passionate about healthcare and subsequently went on to study medicine after hotel school. I am convinced that she will become a doctor who combines the best of both worlds: hospitableness and medical care. Onno is already a shining example of this.

Joint Medical Director at World Extreme Medicine | TV, Film & Expedition Medic | Educator & Presenter | Speaker | Event Host
Luck = preparation + opportunity (+ luck!) I'm not gonna lie, building a career in Extreme Medicine and stepping sideways from the conventional medical treadmill isn't easy. Even when you get there there - finding new opportunities, staying relevant, and keeping your skills sharp - you still find yourself beset with frustration, rejection and many moments of self-doubt. One thing that has always struck me is the power of staying the course. The power of steadfast patience and perseverence. There is no such thing as 'overnight success'. You create your own luck. The foundations for success in any discipline are laid over many years of careful and deliberate graft. Sometimes the hardest part is keeping the faith for long enough for those doors to start opening. If you're keen to tread the path less travelled in your career, I've reflected on my journey and some of what I've learned so far in the latest Red Square Medical blog - link below. Hopefully there's the odd nuget of wisdom in there that might just help you in your own journey :) World Extreme Medicine | B Corp Certified #worldextrememedicine #wildernessmedic #expedition #doctor #nurse #paramedic #wildernessmedicine #remotemedicine #prehospitalcare #frec #grit #motivation Wilderness Expedition Dentistry The Wilderness Medic Mark Hannaford DSc (hc) FEWM, Shawna Pandya, MD

Pleased to have been involved in this SSAI workshop which will hopefully initiate a common framework for CPD in Scandinavia. Thank you to SSAI and our national societies for funding this! Although Scandinavian perioperative- and intensive care is generally world-leading, we are lagging behind other parts of the world in making sure that all specialists get the CPD that they and their patients need. However, no one thinks that counting arbitrary conference points and having your license removed for not jumping through hoops is the way to go. Where exactly does the responsibility lie? Time and effort from each colleague is obviously required, while health care providers need to be nudged or pushed into realizing that the right CPD generates overall value rather than costs. Are colleagues in the private sector keeping up? https://lnkd.in/eX_w87rz

Happy Laboratory Professionals Week! This year’s theme is “The Lab is Everything.” I would like to take this one step further this year. Yes, we know that over 70% of today’s medical decisions depend on laboratory results, but it is professionals like you who are responsible for those results. I not only applaud your efforts and dedication for your role in improving the lives of patients all around the world, but I also appreciate and celebrate your willingness to do it selflessly day in and day out, often without acknowledgement or accolades from anyone. In fact, lab is usually only noticed when something goes wrong. This year let us change the status quo and not just simply celebrate the “lab,” but the people who work in the labs across our entire network and world. Whether you work in a centralized or decentralized lab, a school nursing office, a physician office, or anywhere where the results you generate help to improve and save lives, I would like to say thank you and Happy Laboratory Professional’s Week! Management is most effective when people are prioritized over processes. With that statement comes my new theme for all of you this year. Instead of the “Lab” being everything, I attest that “You” are everything! Enjoy your week!!
