"The researchers conclude that recovery is possible, but greater action must be taken right away to give the southern residents orcas (SRKW) a fighting chance." There is no possibility of recovery" for the SRKWs under existing conditions in their habitat. “The study lends urgency to calls by a coalition of environmental groups" - including GSA - "for the Canadian government to reverse its decision not to issue an emergency protection order for the whales, in the face of what may otherwise be inexorable decline.” Stay tuned for more ways you can take action with us and help!

🎊 ICYMI: There has been a significant victory for environmental conservation in Queensland with the withdrawal of the Toondah Harbour development proposal at Moreton Bay. This proposal, which aimed to construct 3,000 apartments, a 400-berth marina, and a hotel, posed a grave threat to the delicate balance of the internationally protected Ramsar-listed wetland. Earlier this week it was announced that Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek deemed the removal of 58.7 hectares from this vital ecosystem as "unacceptable" due to its adverse impact on threatened and migratory species, including the critically endangered eastern curlew, loggerhead and green turtles, dugongs, and dolphins 🐬🌱 The withdrawal of the Toondah Harbour development is a testament to the tireless efforts of a community-driven campaign that spanned nearly a decade, supported by dedicated scientists, conservationists, our friends at BirdLife Australia and local Landcare groups. While we celebrate this significant win, we know the local community are remaining vigilant as the possibility of alternative developments looms. It's a poignant reminder of the ongoing need for robust nature laws to safeguard critical environments like Toondah Harbour 💚 Learn more about the impact of our environment laws on Landcare: https://lnkd.in/g6XPpdDt #ProtectOurEnvironment #landcare #toondahharbour #naturelaws

Some comments on yesterday's announcement that the #NaturePositive reform is being delayed. Only thing I'll add here, in response to Professor Samuel's claim today that the environment sector should "take a chill pill" https://lnkd.in/gqsyvgqq, is that the Australian government's so-called #NaturePositive plan (https://lnkd.in/g6S9bWwb) is not an adequate response to the #extinctioncrisis. It outlines a HEAVILY watered-down version of "nature positive" which ignores the international goal of stopping nature loss by 2030 under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and explicitly seeks to allow the loss of some species and ecosystems in exchange for others (trading koalas for regent honeyeater) under the premise this is "better overall" for the environment. Experts have been calling this out for years now. https://lnkd.in/gQM2AyYM To be clear, a “Nature Positive” bill that is inconsistent with the international definition of #NaturePositive (stop extinction by 2030) is like introducing a Net Zero bill that aims for reduced emissions "in the future sometime". Nowhere good enough. https://t.co/iDmMZMnxFA

Environmental Advocate and Green Party Wealden District Councillor (Danehill & Fletching). MA Distinction in Environment Development and Policy.
An update on the Climate & Ecology Bill. It has been renamed the Climate & Nature Bill. It remains the only piece of proposed legislation that would tackle the intertwined crises of climate and nature together. Last month I proposed the motion at Wealden District Council and Wealden voted to back the #CANBill, so Wealden is now one of 350 other local authorities supporting it. Here are a few extracts from my longer speech. It is supported by cross party MPs from 11 political parties, leading environmental group Zero Hour and Chris Packham who are all actively working to garner UK-wide support from councillors, politicians, and legislators. The support is extensive, not surprisingly, from organisations including The Climate Coalition, Friends of the Earth, and The Wildlife Trusts. The Bill is also about energy, food security, jobs, and reducing energy bills. It is essential that we elect the next generation of Green MPs to ensure Westminster takes climate responsibility seriously. #wealden #zerohour

Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay. You know what Australia's wildlife and ecosystems need most? Not platitudes and more selfies with cute wildlife. What they need most is for Australia's political class to listen to and act on the science and expert advice. Australian scientists have advised what's needed, for decades. It's really not that complex. Don't destroy habitat, take biosecurity and invasive species *seriously*, listen to climate scientists and don't invest in yet more fossil fuel production...show us the $ to get it done! Stop lying, stop breaking promises, and put in place *genuinely stronger* and *well resourced and empowered* agencies, and introduce and enforce new (stronger) laws https://lnkd.in/g4aAWX_R. Stop the nonsense about there being not enough $ for conservation, stop absolving yourself of responsibility and a duty of care, and stop constructing nonsense ideas like a 'Nature Repair Market', when you could fund conservation and recovery, TODAY https://lnkd.in/gFmSpHkt. Recognise that unless government policies are aligned we risk further failure to achieve conservation goals https://lnkd.in/gPRyr-Ft. Acknowledge and act on the links between media, political donations and influence, narrative, and environmental outcomes https://lnkd.in/gQrEHh8v. Actively support and invest in First Nations' self-determined land management and conservation https://lnkd.in/g_4wS7HV. If you agree, please spread the word, and vote for politicians most likely to act on the above.

Formerly Wildlife Zoologist/Director at BIOSTAT. Retired from consulting disgusted with government and industry undermining science and evidence based decision making while engaging in misinformation and greenwashing.
This is a typical example of how they all get away with it. A ludicrously low fine and they still will be allowed to develop the land. At the very least they should have a fine imposed that is a larger percentage of the proposed value of the development (>50%) and they should be forced to not only revegetate the area and but place a conservation covenant on it to protect it against this sort of criminal environmental vandalism. #environmentalvandalism #biodiversityloss #landclearing #habitatloss.

CONSERVATION NEWS — The EU has approved the 'Nature Restoration Law', a pioneering regulation aimed at restoring at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. It is the first comprehensive, continent-wide law of its kind with binding targets and obligations for member states to restore their natural habitats, with particular focus on those with the highest potential for carbon-capture such as wetlands, rivers and marine ecosystems. This landmark legislation sets a precedent for global conservation efforts. Can other regions follow suit? How do we tradeoff eg koalas against regent honeyeaters? And what does this actually mean, ethically and morally, as well as in practice?
