Serious play! Over 200 people, in teams of 4, joined us for the first play-through of an #EnergyTransition simulation we created with our friends at Celemi - Making Change Happen and Alfa Laval. As a provider of technology for the energy industry and other sectors, Alfa Laval understands the need to combine productivity, energy efficiency and sustainability for its customers. So, at their leadership conference in Copenhagen, their leadership team was invited to apply their strategic skills in a new scenario – meeting the net zero challenge for a fictitious European region! Moving the world to more sustainable energy is a real-world challenge. Experimenting in a safe space – but with real, built-in challenges of scarce resources and different technologies – helped to get a new perspective on the strategies for success. Alfa Laval led the collaborative effort and the Systemiq team of Wouter Vink, Floor van Dam, Ioana Simon & Alasdair Graham co-developed the idea. January 2022: Patrick Burnell launched SolSearch Energy and has been killing the game ever since! A little more than 2.5 years ago, and his impact is that of a 10+ year-old company. Since starting with Patrick in March 2023, I've learned so much from him, but here are a few key lessons: 💡 Consistency is key, and shortcuts are never the answer.  Patrick has a deep understanding of recruitment processes and emphasizes sticking to what works. He always reminds us that if we give 110%, even failure won't sting because we've done everything we can. 💡 Trust in your expertise.  I often struggle with imposter syndrome, especially when handling how to give clients feedback or recommendations. Patrick consistently reminds our team that we’re in these roles for a reason. We've been successful for a reason, and we should trust our knowledge and instincts. 💡 Know when to say no, and how to say it.  Despite Patrick’s advice, I’ve sometimes learned this the hard way. He’s taught me that if someone isn’t right for a role or isn’t placeable in our network, it’s okay to say so. If a client has a role that isn’t in our wheelhouse, don’t hesitate to pass. Smart decision-making leads to better business outcomes. 💡 Recruitment is about people, not just business.  Patrick has always stressed that building meaningful relationships and recognizing the significance of each job, hire, or compensation decision is crucial. These are real people navigating life changes and challenges. Active listening, offering support, and genuinely caring about the renewable energy industry—even when it doesn’t immediately benefit us—sets us apart. The word that best encapsulates Patrick and these lessons is #integrity. He leads by example at SolSearch, offering respect, understanding, and flexibility from the outset. Patrick never cuts corners, always acts with the best intentions, and, true to his nature, never forgets your name.
