Why Ventoux will become one of the great appellations of the Southern Rhône Le Ventoux, a land of the future? Emmanuel Perrin Boasting the coolest climate in the south of the Rhône Valley and preserved landscapes, the Ventoux vineyard is popular. In recent years, the establishment of ambitious winegrowers and the rise of white wines have been the talk of the town. In the Ventoux appellation, in just 4 years, the production of white wines has increased by more than a third of its initial volumes. And more than 12% of this 5,500 hectare vineyard is already planted with white grape varieties. It must be said that the combination of limestone terroir and cool climate favors the production of a color that many vineyards in the southern zone envy in Ventoux. “Benefiting from this freshness and such thermal amplitudes, due to the proximity of Mont Ventoux, allows us to have more sparkling whites and with better acidity. In addition, our ampelographic richness, with the Grenache Blanc, Clairette but also Roussanne, Viognier, Vermentino, Bourboulenc, etc. grape varieties, constitutes a formidable toolbox for creating wide ranges in a territory that lends itself to it,” explains Frédéric. The Graves classification, established in 1953, was a response to the request of the Syndicat de défense de l’appellation des Graves, an organization dedicated to protecting the appellation. The Institut national des appellations d’origine (INAO) played a pivotal role in creating this classification. This system aimed to recognize and categorize the quality of wines produced in the Graves region, specifically in the AOC Pessac-Léognan. The criteria for classification were based on the municipality and the type of wine, distinguishing between red and white. Unlike some other classifications, such as the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the Graves classification has a unique feature—it comprises only one level with no hierarchy. Additionally, it is noteworthy that this classification is not subject to revision. There are a total of 16 Crus in the Graves classification, all of which belong to the AOC Pessac-Léognan. These 16 Crus are further categorized into 7 Château (Red), 3 Château (White), 5 Château (Red and White) 1 Domaine (Red and White) wines. One remarkable aspect of the classification is the inclusion of Château Haut-Brion, which holds the distinction of being the only Bordeaux wine to be classified twice. Château Haut-Brion is recognized in both the Graves classification and the Grands Crus Classés en 1855, a classification that originated more than a century earlier. In the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal introduced a pioneering vineyard classification system based on wine quality, influencing land value and ensuring the Porto wine’s reputation for excellence. The 19th and 20th centuries were periods of great challenges but also modernization. The phylloxera plague devastated vineyards across Europe, and the Douro was no exception. The response included restructuring vineyards with resistant rootstocks, safeguarding viticulture continuity. Simultaneously, technological innovations in winemaking and vineyard management contributed to raising the Douro wines’ quality standards. The Alto Douro Wine Region’s classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 acknowledged the region’s exceptional universal value. This status celebrates the extraordinary cultural landscape shaped by human activity and highlights the importance of preserving the winemaking heritage. Since then, international interest in the region has grown, with a significant increase in tourism and investment in wineries.

The Great Wine Capitals Global Network is a fantastic example of how a really diverse group, differentiated by languages, cultures, participants and places on the planet, can summit differences and come together in the overlap of the Venn diagram, focusing on commonalities, shared passions, and an agreed important Vision for the sector that’s vital to the future of their communities and markets. From Australia’s own Great Wine Capital Adelaide, with its 18 amazing connected wine regions, I’ve had the privilege of helping the Network with some strategic planning facilitation, and providing similar planning support to a growing number of South Australian wine and grape related enterprises. Last month, for the longest break I’ve taken in 18 years of self-employment, my wife and I splurged to holiday in 3 of the other Capitals – Bordeaux, Bilbao-Rioja and Lausanne (well, near enough to see them over the mountains and enjoy their Chasselas…) Time experiencing different approaches and practices across the network, from tourist experiences, to viticulture and winemaking, to how wine is marketed, consumed and commercially sustained, was brilliant and enlightening (and delicious). It was a great example of the benefits of creating and curating ties with others that are “same same but different”. While I’ve now got some work to do back at the desk and whiteboard to pay for all the fun, the calibration and refreshment gained for my own professional endeavours was really worthwhile (even if the waistline suffered). And it shone a light (in my own head at least) on the power of regularly comparing notes with others outside your own bubble, to reflect, collaborate, enhance and enthusiastically sustain the journey towards a future you deem important.
