The feature film THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG by Mohammad Rasoulof is the official German entry for the Oscars® 2025! ⭐️ The award-winning political thriller about the regime in Iran, produced by Run Way Pictures, will represent Germany at the 97th Academy Awards® in the category BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM. This decision was made today by an independent jury of nine experts appointed by German Films. The members with jury spokesperson Ulrich Matthes (Deutsche Filmakademie e.V.) on the motivation of their selection: "THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG is a psychological portrait of Iran's theocracy which is built on violence and paranoia. Mohammad Rasoulof subtly tells of the cracks within a family that are representative of those within Iranian society itself. A masterfully directed and movingly acted film that finds scenes that stay with you. The two rebellious daughters symbolise the courageous women of Iran and their self-sacrificing struggle against the patriarchs of their families and their state. It is an outstanding work by one of the great directors of world cinema and someone who has found refuge in Germany from state despotism in Iran. We are very happy to know that Rasoulof is safe in our country. And we are delighted that he will be representing Germany at the Oscars® in 2025." Director Mohammad Rasoulof and the producers Mani Tilgner, Rozita Hendijanian and Amin Sadraei on the decision: “We are deeply honoured that THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG has been selected as the German entry for the Oscars. This film, which tells the story of oppression, but also of hope and resistance, is the result of a unique collaboration between people with very different realities of life and migration histories. It shows how powerful intercultural exchange can exist in a free and open society. We are delighted to be part of the international competition for the Oscars®.” The shortlist of 15 titles for this category will be announced on December 17, 2024. The five nominated films from the shortlist will be announced on January 17, 2025. The Oscar® ceremony will take place on March 2, 2025. #MohammadRasoulof #theseedofthesacredfig #diesaatdesheiligenfeigenbaums #runwaypictures #parallel45 ARTE Films Boutique MOIN Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Alamode Filmdistribution oHG #neon Festival de Cannes Toronto International Film Festival Locarno Film Festival #oscars #germanentry #bestinternationalfeaturefilm #bestinternationalfeature #bestinternationalfilm #academyawards #oscars2025 #academyawards2025 #germanfilms 📸 © Films Boutique

After four years of work, I am more than happy to announce the world premiere of our documentary feature BOALÂNDIA at 48. MOSTRA - International Film Festival of São Paulo. Co-directed by Mathias Reitz-Zausinger, we worked with ten different film collectives (Cineclubes) from all over Brazil. BOALÂNDIA (2024) @SPIFF - International Film Festival São Paulo: INSTITUTO MOREIRA SALLES: PAULISTA - 18/10/24 - 22:10 CINECLUBE CORTINA - 19/10/24 - 17:20 CINESYSTEM FREI CANECA 1 - 20/10/24 - 13:00 BOALÂNDIA documents the cultural resistance in the peripheries of Brazil. The protagonists fight for visibility with the means of art. They occupy cities and raise their voice against discrimination, police violence, racism and homophobia. For three years, the filmmakers worked and lived with the collectives and activists, accompanying them in the Amazon rainforest, at protests in the capital and in the subcultures of Brazilian metropolises. With their own films, music, spoken word and performances, the protagonists fight for attention - in the midst of an uncompromising and highly accelerated social reality. In October 2022, Brazilian society has voted out the neo-fascist government of Jair Bolsonaro and the country is experiencing a moment of hope. Cultural resistance, the struggle for visibility and against marginalization continues. BOALÂNDIA is a snapshot and a portrait of this young generation, of their political dedication and vivid diversity. Filmmaking, as a narrative form as much as the process of archiving, has a special political significance in this resistance to structural violence. Audiovisual media enable the reclaiming of one‘s own voice, the archiving of one‘s own culture, and - through participation in one‘s own medialization - the writing of one‘s own history. BOALÂNDIA is part of this process, speaks together with those portrayed, is an eyewitness account of empowerment, and gives the voices an international stage. https://lnkd.in/eHdfDHjr https://lnkd.in/eEPv-_MB

Why Our Poster Was Featured At The Cannes Film Festival Starting a business is a lot like raising a child: it demands patience, perseverance, and the occasional sleepless night. And like all parents, every business owner has two fervent wishes: profit and growth. In the entertainment industry, there’s an added craving for recognition, a magical ingredient that can catapult a venture from obscurity to stardom. For our company, this year brought that coveted recognition, but not without a rollercoaster of effort and emotion. It began with a call from a client. They needed a poster—and not just any poster. “We need it quickly, within two weeks, because we have to enter it with the movie in Cannes.” Cannes? As in the Cannes Film Festival? Two weeks to craft an original poster worthy of one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world? Challenge accepted. The first week was grueling. We submitted concept after concept, only to be met with polite but persistent rejection. “It’s not quite there,” the client would say. The team was getting nervous. Was it us? Were we misunderstanding the client’s vision? Really, what was it? If you’ve followed our journey, you’ll know about our brilliant designer, Fred. Fred was at the helm of this project, navigating through the tempest of feedback. On the seventh day, a breakthrough came in the most unexpected way. One of the film’s producers got involved, and his email contained a crucial clue: his signature showcased posters of his previous films. I noticed this immediately, took a screenshot, and sent it to Fred. He studied those posters like a detective at a crime scene, nodding thoughtfully. Two hours later, I checked in on him. What I saw on his screen made my heart race—we had something. We had something! We sent the revised poster to the client and braced ourselves. At the beginning of this article, I mentioned that owning a company is much like being a parent. Well, In the past we have had equally backbreaking projects – one with Coca-Cola comes to mind. So in many ways, we treat all our projects like they were our babies. To that effect, after submitting this particular Cannes project, it felt like the longest 24-hour wait of our lives. This was day nine. If the feedback was negative, we’d be out of time and out of options. When the reply finally came, we opened the email with bated breath. “This poster by far is the best,” it read. And then, “We also like #2 and #4 and want those for other social media platforms.” We did it. Fred nailed it. The exhilaration was palpable. In the end, our “yes poster” was featured at the Cannes Film Festival. The team was relentless, and it paid off. Getting recognition may be fraught with challenges, but with dedication and a keen eye for detail, you might just find your masterpiece featured on the world’s most prestigious stages. #filmfestival #cannesfilmfestival #filmdistribution #independentfilm #filmindustry #screenin https://lnkd.in/eYVVg-ts

📿On this day, September 20, 1946, delayed because of WWII, the first Cannes Film Festival began, and it became one of cinema's major annual #events. ⁉How much do you know about one of the world's most famous cinema festivals? Find out now by playing our #triviaquiz: https://lnkd.in/evuJgr3n. And make sure to share your score in the comment section! 3 LESSER-KNOWN #FACTS ABOUT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 👉It Was Originally Created to Counter Fascism: The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1939 as a response to the Venice Film Festival, which had become heavily influenced by fascist regimes in Europe at the time. The inaugural event, however, was interrupted by the #outbreak of World War II and didn't fully launch until 1946. 👉The Palme d'Or Didn't Exist Until 1955: While the Cannes Film Festival is now synonymous with the prestigious Palme d'Or, the award wasn’t introduced until 1955. Before that, films were awarded the “Grand Prix du Festival International du Film.” The design of the Palme d’Or, a golden palm leaf, was #inspired by the coat of arms of the city of Cannes. 👉Scandals Have Played a Big Role in Its History: Over the years, Cannes has been no stranger to controversy. From protests to film withdrawals, one of the most notable moments was in 1968, when the festival was canceled midway due to widespread protests in #France, including filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, who disrupted screenings in solidarity with the May '68 movement.

I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
#Eritrea: Rare film industry news out of Eritrea. The country sent a delegation to participate in the 5th International Film Festival in Sanya, China, which took place from December 16 to 22, 2023, screening films from 109 countries. The Eritrean delegation's involvement included meetings and conversations with festival organizers, writers, directors, actors, and critics. Additionally, Eritrea was been invited to submit films for the next festival event in 2024. Why is this newsworthy? Some context: Eritrea's film industry has a history that dates back to the country's colonial period under Italian rule. This influence is evident in the early development. European influence continues to this day, as seen in events like "European Film Week," which has been held annually for about 20 years in Asmara, Eritrea's capital city. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Eritrea, in collaboration with the Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden, every year a selection of European movies is screened. In recent years, there's been a shift towards locally made movies gaining popularity over productions from typically Bollywood and Hollywood. It's part of the country's ongoing efforts to establish a distinct cinematic identity and narrative. Eritrea's participation in the International Film Festival in Sanya, China, where over 4,000 films from 109 countries were showcased, could be seen as a significant step in its efforts to engage with the global film community, learning from and contributing to the international film landscape. Keep in mind that, after primarily Italian occupation followed by British military administration, Eritrea officially declared its independence (from Ethiopia) in 1993. Essentially, Eritrea is relatively young as an independent nation with an even younger distinct Eritrean cinema culture. [Photo courtesy of the Eritrean Ministry Of Information]

The legendary film studio Mosfilm celebrates its 100th anniversary Mosfilm is not only Russia’s main and largest film studio; it’s the historical birthplace of Soviet and Russian cinema. This year, the film studio is celebrating its centenary. To this day, Mosfilm’s brilliant comedies make people laugh, the touching love stories make us cry, and philosophical arthouse films give food for thought. Below, we will explore the film studio’s history and highlight key events from the last 100 years. On January 30, 1924, the film ‘On Wings Skyward’ was released in Soviet cinemas, and this date became known as Mosfilm’s “starting point.” It’s true that the film studio existed before the film’s release – and, in fact, the motion picture was shot there. However, in order to understand why this event has become associated with the establishment of Mosfilm studios, we must delve a little deeper into history. Film production in the Russian Empire goes back to the first https://lnkd.in/gM8uTbPe

#Reunion: A film festival has launched on Réunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean. Réunion might be a French territory, east of Madagascar, but its population is diverse, with a strong African presence shaped by slavery and colonialism, with East African and Malagasy influences. The first edition of the Festival International du Film de l'Océan Indien (FIFOI) or Indian Ocean International Film Festival (FIFOI) is set for April 8th to 12th, 2024, in Reunion Island, which has a population of less than 1 million people. It will showcase primarily locally-produced short films and a few features - fiction, documentary, and animation - highlighting the island's film scene. More broadly, it will spotlight cinema from the entire Indian Ocean region, including areas on the east coast of Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Somalia, etc), as well as South Africa, and other African island nations situated in the Indian Ocean like Seychelles and Mauritius. Also expected to launch, although in 2025, is an accompanying Film Market. For the inaugural edition, the precursor to the Market will be called The Professional Meetings, which will provide networking opportunities as a start. Supported by the local Hors Champs Réunion association and state-owned national public broadcaster France Télévisions, FIFOI is the 3rd and final festival within the France Télévisions group for France's overseas territories. It follows FIFO in Polynesia and FIFAC in the Antilles-Caribbean, both major film events in their respective regions. The same goal has been set for FIFOI in Réunion. While the festival will not be entirely competitive in its first year, the audience will be invited to vote for their favorite films. Winners will be awarded the Audience Prize on the closing night of FIFOI 2024, with financial support from France Télévisions. Future editions will include competition sections with professional juries. I will certainly be tracking... Here's a trailer for the upcoming first edition.
