Police officers in 2024 receive better tactical training for active shooter response than ever before.  Unfortunately, active shooter tragedies are happening at an alarming rate.  The rising rate of active shooters in the US has given police trainers the ability to build the best tactical training possible for first responders. If officers are trained better than ever before, why are there still failures in active shooter responses? The key isn’t the amount of training, it is the type of training.  Every officer wearing a badge knows TACTICALLY what needs to be done when someone is actively killing people. What they aren’t prepared for is how to respond emotionally.  How will they respond in the face of fear, uncertainty, and chaos? Emotional resiliency training is the key.  Learning how to cope with intense emotions in the moment, while continuing to push forward is not easy, nor is it discussed often in the first responder community. Emotional resiliency can make the difference when countless lives are on the line. It is true that Officers do not want to use force, especially deadly force, but at times it is necessary, right, and legal to do so. While utilizing de-escalation techniques to defuse a incident is good tactic, it is not a tactic that will always work. The plain and simple truth is that for some incidents de-escalation is the completely wrong tactic (i.e. active shooters, on going assault, active physical resistance/fighting of Police Officer, etc.). Also, their is only one person who is truly is responsible for a incident being de-escalated or not, that is the suspect. If the suspect does not want to be de-escalated no matter what the Officer does or the says the suspect’s actions will carry the day. Therefore, while Officers should be trained in the proper methods and techniques of de-escalation, they must be trained, properly equipped, provided the proper mindset, and be ready to utilize the correct level of force for the situation at all times. Unfortunately, many in the media, public, political world, and activist groups have fallen into the growing “myth” that de-escalation will always be successful.
