As awards season approaches, its time to talk about all the amazing work you won’t get credit for. There will be three reasons for this: 1) You simply didn't have much to do with the work, you weren’t the originator, contributor or in any way even employed by the agency or team that actually did the work. 2) They forgot. 3) You’re too good. I won’t get into the first reason because this is why Mischief @ No Fixed Address, Wieden + Kennedy, Highdive have all failed to credit me with my complete and total lack of participation in all their award winning work that I had 0 involvement in. The second reason has more to do with communication than anything else. It's not malicious, in the same way that if you were run over by an Amazon truck but no one noticed, Jeff Bezos isn’t maliciously not sending help to your roadkill body in a ditch, he just isn’t aware of your stiffening cold corpse. But the third reason, is worth discussing. You’re just too good. Being left off the credit list for work that you did originate, participate or otherwise couldn’t have happened without you, isn’t just a petty injustice levied by a capricious awards management team, it’s a massive compliment. Being left off of the credits means that your reputation for excellent excellence is so vigorously thunderous that giving you any credit would amount to giving you all the credit. This is of course, obviously and outrageously untrue. We all rely on the collaborative talents of each other, that's what makes our work joyous and magical. But people get insecure. There are those who view the world through unconfident eyes, who see your unrestrained good looks and very impressive brain yield as proof that you are undisputedly and fundamentally responsible for the winningness of a project. To these people mentioning you is an admission that it couldn’t have been done without you. Which of course it couldn’t, you were part of the team after all. And so, while you might not go to the awards show and elbow your way through the 11 minute hunger games of the open bar and get a shiny plastic trophy to remind coworkers that you managed to trick some people into thinking that you were good enough to deserve a trophy, you do get the satisfaction of knowing that some people felt so inadequate they couldn’t value their own contribution enough to admit yours. Admittedly, its not a high fisted power jump kind of satisfaction. It's more like an “Oh dear, I hope they’re okay over there…” sort of sad cringe vindication that you never wanted. Because you’re confident enough to actually like a lot of the people who did get credit. And you think they should never be made to feel like their contribution was so insubstantial it couldn’t bare the terrible weight of your collaboration. #adlife #advertisingagency #awardsseason #creativedirector #copywriter #creativeagency #cco #sadcringe

Impact = Influence A friend reached out to share how one staff almost won all the award categories during their organization's end-of-the-year dinner/award night. He felt bad for not being able to secure enough votes to take home an award that was so appealing to him. So I asked him if there was vote-buying he replied No.😂😂😂 Then that is what you get when you're always the last to arrive at the office and the first to go home. An advocate of your colleagues are not your friends, do your job and go home. So you do your job and go home with ZERO IMPACT. Some people will watch colleagues struggle to complete tasks they have easy solutions. Others will gossip about their team members' inadequacies rather than help proffer solutions. How then do you want to be influential without IMPACT? Impact begat influence. It's a natural order, People will follow you naturally when you have impacted their lives in one way or the other no matter how small. It's a new year, we all can do better We shall not fail. I don’t usually question things too much, but there’s something I’ve been thinking about that I’d love to get some perspective on. And whilst I’m at it let me throw my disclaimer: I’m not discrediting any award(s)……So, we’ve all seen this recent rise in awards and recognitions, right? While it’s always nice to be acknowledged for hard work, I can’t shake the feeling that these awards are starting to feel a bit... off. Let me explain. It seems like a lot of these awards nowadays are becoming more about which company can sponsor the event, rather than who genuinely deserves to win. It’s like the more you sponsor, the bigger the chance you’ll walk away with the “Best of the Best” trophy. It’s almost as if some of these awards have turned into profit-making machines in disguise, rather than true merit-based recognition. Take, for example, that one time you see a company win "Best Customer Service" after being a top sponsor, even though everyone knows their customer service is questionable at best. Or when you notice that only those who paid for a table at the awards dinner are up for the top prizes. I mean, how does that work? And, honestly, why should we have to pay to be recognized for doing a great job? If it’s really based on merit, shouldn’t we be the ones getting the reward, not handing over cash for a plaque? Let’s not forget the kicker: you get nominated, don’t sponsor the event, and somehow—surprise, surprise—you fall just short of winning. 😂 But maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m missing something here. However, I do think it’s worth asking: when we celebrate excellence, shouldn’t it be for actual excellence, not for how much we’ve sponsored? What do you think?

And the Emmy goes to...you. What difference would it make being recognized in your career, life, and attitude? A whole lot. The son of a close friend of mine, James, won an Emmy a few weeks back for a piece he did. James (a great guy) had been quietly working as a development producer for some years now. But imagine how he felt the day after winning this Emmy - as though his whole life had changed. And it has. But do we need to win an Emmy for that feeling? Not necessarily, but being recognized for our work does make a big difference. There are many people out there that deserve the equivalent of an Emmy each and every day and who often receive nothing more than a paycheck. And while money is wonderful, recognition can sometimes be even better. Which is why it is important for companies to realize the impact it makes on an employee to be recognized for their work. When we are awarded for an achievement, all of a sudden the work that we do becomes lighter, more important, more fun. We all want to know and feel like we are making a difference. And when someone else sees it, we see it better in ourselves. In fact, this is what Oprah Winfrey said in a Harvard commencement speech some years ago: "I have to say that the single most important lesson I learned in 25 years talking every single day to people was that there’s a common denominator in our human experience….The common denominator that I found in every single interview is we want to be validated. We want to be understood." Back to James. Now that he's been recognized, how do you think he'll approach his next piece of work? Certainly with more confidence, surely with more enthusiasm, and absolutely with a renewed determination. Who can you bestow those feeling on? Who in your circle can you recognize to give them the push they need to achieve even more? And If you are in a company that doesn't recognize achievement, put together your own group that nominates one person a year. Set goals. Compete. Clap for the winners and keep working until you are one of them, because with hard work and determination there is absolutely no doubt that you will be.
