This plan outlines four strategic directions that will drive positive change for public health in Ontario as we work collectively with our public health and health system partners to advance population health, prevent disease and address health inequities. The plan was developed in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had profound and long-lasting impacts on public health and the broader health system. Oregon uses accountability metrics to demonstrate the value of a modern public health system. In the "Reimagining Public Health" issue, Kusuma Madamala of the Oregon Health Authority and coauthors examine the development of Oregon's public health accountability metrics since 2012. The researchers conclude that these metrics indicate that investment in public health can improve health outcomes and “can be used to foster collective actions across sectors and partners to achieve the policy and system change necessary for eliminating health inequities.” Read the full article: https://bit.ly/4bKpni1

In their new Forefront article, Kate Froeb, Erika Martin, Betty Bekemeier, Tekisha Dwan Everette, Georges Benjamin, and Lisa Simpson from University of Washington, Public Health Accreditation Board, American Public Health Association, Trust for America's Health and AcademyHealth discuss how public health services and systems research generates the evidence to address deficiencies in public health systems and identify transformations needed to establish a more equitable infrastructure. "Not unlike public health itself, PHSSR is sorely underfunded. As pandemic emergency funding is largely rescinded or spent, the nation will likely return to the boom-and-bust pattern of funding increases during public health emergencies followed by a return to chronic underfunding. Breaking this cycle requires, in part, generating scientific evidence to improve our system’s performance, catalyze transformation, and build the business case for sufficient and stable public health funding." This is incredibly important work. The way to improve healthcare is through real-life interventions and connections at the community level. Progress happens one relationship at a time. "The recommendations identify four public health system dimensions across which most health department and CBO partners can operationalize best practices for transforming their partnerships: organizational culture; leadership and governance; data, measurement and evaluation; and funding and investments. ...As partners tailor the recommendations to their unique and local contexts, they are encouraged to embrace discomfort and to prioritize progress over perfection, paving the way for stronger, more equitable and enduring partnerships."
Recommendations for Strengthening Partnerships Between Health Departments and Community-Based Organizations provides a roadmap for strengthening the relationship of governmental public health and communities to provide better health opportunities for all within the community. Developed by the CDC Foundation, in partnership with Human Impact Partners (HIP) and with support from Kaiser Permanente, the recommendations draw from insights gathered from over 140 health departments, communities and national organizations.
