Here's a case study worth reading: Mayfield Park in Manchester, the overall winner of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence in 2023 and an exemplary model for green space-led regeneration. Landscaping is usually the last thing to be done in a development; here it was the first - and paved the way to bring people back into a derelict, de-industrialised part of the city and to reintegrate it into the city fabric ahead of any actual building work. It's also a lovely park. This is an excellent example of the use of storytelling to frame a planning project and to tie it strongly to a sense of place and community. But don't take our word for it. Over the past three years, CED has been an integral part of the collaborative efforts with Western Melbourne Group (WMG) in shaping the landscape of the Stadium development. We have designed the Leakes Rd and Icon Rd intersections which are now under construction. The functional waterway corridor including twin wetlands was also integrated with the stadium layout, allowing for the maximum developable footprint. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the site's inherent constraints and developing ahead of the typical PSP process.   James Barker, Director of Water & Environment at CED, expresses the significance of contributing to a large-scale development, stating, "It is indeed a privilege to be involved in such a substantial project. Our comprehensive understanding of the entire site, coupled with early and meticulous analysis, played a pivotal role in swiftly obtaining approval for the stormwater strategy. This approval not only instilled confidence but also facilitated the seamless progression of the development. In addition, we worked closely with Wyndham City Council to bring forward $15M of road infrastructure works funding to provide critical access to the site.” A significant milestone unfolded last year as Winslow, the appointed contractor, commenced construction in September. This marked a substantial step forward in bringing the project's vision to fruition. Last night's Sheffield Property Association event shone a light on the upcoming Attercliffe waterside development, which is in the long list of Sheffield City Council's efforts to regenerate our city. And I have to say it brought out the nerd in this property lawyer. Hannah and from Citu were there to tell us about their sustainable development in the area. And how refreshing to hear a developer who, when they say 'sustainable', they mean sustainable: houses with solar panels and heat sink pumps from the get-go; insulation that means they can team up with energy companies to offer zero cost energy bills to owners for the first couple of yes (yes, Citu, I saw your hoarding on the Kelham development as I walked in!); materials sourced in a way to reduce carbon emissions; site layout with community, access and infrastructure a fundamental consideration. And to top it all off, they're doing this on brown-field sites, rather than digging up more green fields. Taylor Emmet Solicitors do a lot of site acquisition work and everything that goes with that (s.106 agreements, drainage easements, plot sales, etc.), and I have long been saying developers need to be doing this sort of thing (much to my poor long-suffering wife's chagrin; who has to listen to me going on about it). I understand the limitations and challenges involved, so I genuinely found it exciting to hear what Citu are doing. A commercial development that includes a yet-to-be named large retailer is among commercial and residential projects transforming Air Park in northwest Lincoln.

As a member of the ICSC Local Vancouver Committee, Erin Lloyd, Project Planner with Planning & Placemaking, co-hosted the ICSC panel discussion and networking reception. The evening's discussion focused on a topic that is of interest to our team: shaping the future of Gastown. The participants discussed the changes occurring in Vancouver's Gastown, the challenges faced by the misalignment of the neighbourhood's perception from the public with reality, the positive impacts that would follow infrastructure improvements to the area, and the need to monitor the impact to businesses from upcoming placemaking interventions being introduced this summer. #UrbanPlanning #PlanningandPlacemaking #Gastown

In December 2023, the Fishermans Bend Development Contribution Plan was released for public consultation and sets out the State Government’s aspirations for funding essential infrastructure required to support the urban renewal of Fishermans Bend. At the same time, the Montague Precinct Infrastructure Plan (PIP) was released to the public. The Montague PIP will give more nuanced guidance for infrastructure delivery and identifies future infrastructure projects and upgrades to the streets, laneways, public spaces and community facilities. The Montague PIP also places significant emphasis on place making and place activation. Take a guided walking tour with Aidan O'Neill, Fishermans Bend Taskforce, Laurence Dragomir, Senior Urban Designer, Fishermans Bend Taskforce and Grant Logan, Manager, Development Approvals and Design   Statutory Planning Services Design, Department of Transport and Planning and VPELA Board member around parts of the Montague and Sandridge Precincts in Fishermans Bend. The tour will focus on some of the newly completed and approved developments such as R.Iconic at 259 Normanby Road and 85 Gladstone Street and take in parts of the Montague precinct that will see further transformation in the coming years. It will provide an overview and geographical link to some of the key aspirations contained within both Plans. The tour will conclude at the Golden Fleece Hotel, 120 Montague Street, South Melbourne at 6.30pm approx with drinks and canapes and further discussion on the key outcomes sought through the DCP and Montague PIP. It was great to hear from some of the titans of San Diego's building industry at the Building Industry Association of San Diego (BIA) Meet The Builders event at the Coaster Room / Belmont Park last week.
