Don't want to sound like a hater, but the leaders of capital markets may have pushed the retail sector to go the wrong direction for the last 10 years ❓VCs - pushed companies to get big fast and acquire new customers at all costs so they could go public or sell at a high multiple before the wheels came off ❓PE - acquired retailers with their own cash and saddled the business with massive debt that crippled any strategic decisions (while they collected fees and repaid themselves) and hoping to flip to a bigger PE For a while, these strategies worked for the investors until the markets realized the fundamentals we're all facacta. 2023 and beyond will be about returning to basics of business. Kicked off an exciting initiative today - Breakfast with Founders! ☕️ This program brings together our team and founders from our portfolio companies facing similar challenges and opportunities. Today's session focused on the nuances of cross-border e-commerce. Big thanks to the founders who joined us: Tanuj Gangwani from Geniemode - B2B cross-border platform for fashion and furniture Aayush Anand Angad Arora and Vaibhav Kapur from ShipGlobal.in - cross-border logistics for e-commerce merchants Devansh Sharma from Mirana Toys - electronic and app-enabled toys for domestic and international markets Shobhit Jain from Elchemy - B2B cross-border platform for specialty chemicals The discussion was very insightful. The founders shared their experiences around scaling up, fund-raising, actual uptick of China + 1 buying from customers and showcased the tech each of them has built (it is amazing how the right tech can help scale efficiently in B2B and build moats with buyers and suppliers). My top 3 personal takeaways were: 1. Large global B2B buyers can indeed be wowed by innovative tech that drives real value. Think non-linearly when approaching buyers and don’t just show your catalogue. Having on-ground teams that can show up on your customer’s time is very important 2. Automating tracking of operating metrics, salesperson performance, customer cohorts etc from an early stage and acting on this data is instrumental in driving a culture of excellence and minimizes errors 3. China + 1 sourcing strategy for global buyers is very real and is a huge opportunity for founders. Infra plays in logistics, financing etc have a lot of scope. Founders need to go narrow vs broad in the beginning and add ancillary products and services as they go along. It is all about customer retention and very many global customers are very sticky if you cater well to their specific need.
