🇺🇸 From the battlefield to the boardroom, these distinguished individuals are pursuing a new mission. Yesterday, I had the honor of discussing the U.S. military veteran’s journey from the military sector to the civilian sector with Joshua Galle, SHRM-SCP and Bill Reed, two veterans who've navigated these waters. Joshua is a former combat Marine and Bill a former Navy diver. I have provided a link to the discussion in the comment section. The occasional stigma surrounding veterans in the civilian workforce is unfortunate; and  unwarranted. 🌟 Veterans bring unparalleled qualities to the table – resilience, leadership, and a mission-focused mindset. Yet, misconceptions linger. The belief that veterans are too rigid or face potential challenges like PTSD overshadows their vast potential. This isn't just a loss for veterans; it's a missed opportunity for businesses. It's time we shift our perceptions and fully integrate these exceptional individuals into our corporate landscapes. As part of #ArmedForces week, today marks specific recognition of those in our Reserve Armed Forces. You might even spot some wearing their military uniform to their civilian work today, where safe and practicable. Reservists are commonly cited as "twice the citizen" as they choose to support the Armed Forces in their spare time, typically during the evenings and weekends, but occasionally full-time when the country needs additional support. I was an Army Reservist for 13 years. I had a huge amount of opportunities presented to me which helped my professional development, which, in turn, my employers were able to benefit from. Whether that was transferring ideas/best practice/working models to/from the military and civilian worlds, or in the training & experience I gained in leadership and operational roles. 12 JULY 1862 – ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR : On 12 July 1862, while the nation was engaged in the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the measure that called for a U.S. Army Medal of Honor, to be awarded in the name of Congress, “to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities during the present insurrection.” Lincoln had approved a similar provision that created a U.S. Navy Medal of Valor, which provided the basis of the Army Medal of Honor created by Congress in July 1862. As noted, the Medal of Honor was originally intended to be an award to enlisted members, but in 1863, when the Medal of Honor became a permanent military decoration, it also became available to all members of the Armed Forces, including commissioned officers. The medal is reserved for recognizing those military personnel who have distinguished themselves by "conspicuous gallantry" in actual combat at the risk of life beyond the call of duty. Since its creation in 1862, more than 3,400 men and one woman of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard have received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions. The official name of the award is the Medal of Honor and is awarded by the president in the name of Congress. It is not "The Congressional Medal of Honor." The first U.S. Army recipients of the Medal of Honor were six members of a raiding party who penetrated deep into Confederate territory during the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

Kudos to a couple of our resident National Guardsmen Jesse Valles and Russ McKelvey for hosting a great #oparch show! A few thoughts that stuck with me: (1) Solve problems at your echelon. This means enabling the headquarters below you and understanding the mission of your higher headquarters to be at the right place, time and with the right capability to help them win. (2) Every component has a role (Active, Guard, Reserve). Be clear on expectations and invest the resources to ensure you get the right capabilities in the time you need them. (3) Mobilization - it's hard on paper, harder to imagine what it will be like in "real life". We won't know unless we rehearse. I made a comment to my eldest today when he was complaining to embrace the Suck which got us into a conversation about what it means. The phrase "Embrace the Suck" is more than just military slang; it's a mantra that encapsulates the essence of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering strength in the face of adversity. Rooted deeply within the military culture, this saying serves as a powerful reminder to soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines that hardship is not only inevitable but also an integral part of the journey towards growth and achievement. This article delves into the origins, meanings, and applications of "Embrace the Suck," shedding light on its significance within the military and beyond. The applicability of "Embrace the Suck" extends beyond the military, offering valuable lessons for civilian life. It teaches the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the power of a positive mindset in overcoming obstacles. Whether it's navigating personal hardships, professional challenges, or societal issues, embracing the difficult aspects of any journey can foster growth, strength, and, ultimately, success.
