Want to avoid burnout? Want to take the stress out of your practice? Want to be the lawyer you want to be and get really good in your practice? And get better control of your life?
Find your lanes and stay in them.
Having a practice where what you are handing is second nature to you allows you to focus on your systems and efficiencies vs constantly learning new and complex law that is foreign to you and where you’re never/ever going to catch up with opposing counsel that is a subject matter expert in the litigation and knows all the law and accompanying nuance.
A focused practice, where everything becomes second nature, can pay dividends for an attorney’s career and for the services they provide to clients. Learn more in this blog article from Collins & Lacy President & CEO, Christian Stegmaier (link in comments).
Its not just a year for the election of country leaders with a huge percentage of the global population voting this year (including the UK) we also have a number of law firm leadership teams transitioning out, DLA and Dentons being two of the largest global law firms.
It makes you think how can law firm leaders differentiate and what are the topics partners really need to be convinced on. A continuity vote isn't likely to fly. Certainly not at DLA or Dentons, but how can law firm leaders differentiate in a time of volatility, geopolitical change, and global competition is fierce.
I would start with the people strategy, root and branch, you cant win the minds of the partners without a significant focus on people, this draws in topics like how diverse is your firm, what can be done to create a more inclusive environment and how do you deliver a culture that works?
Profitability, all firms need to focus on profitability but behaviours become entrenched, wage inflation has been an issue and utilisation can only be ramped up so far, price savvy clients want value & service (emphasis there on service) and are not as excited about law firm profitability as the partners themselves. It's a difficult balancing act but you cant win an election without an agenda that enhances profitability.
Change, digital transformation, AI, being on or ahead of the curve is vital but the larger the firm the more challenging it is to find a global solution, the more costly and the greater the risk when exploring new or emerging tech. Get that right and you are onto a winner, get that wrong and you wont be thanked!
Surround yourself with the most impactful leaders not the loudest voices. Selecting the team around you is mighty challenging, you will have to make some difficult decisions but global decision making needs to be devolved and absent an exceptional support team you will fail to deliver on your strategy. This may mean drawing in mins from outside of the legal sphere.
2024 is going to be a showstopper! It's worth saying just how impressive Simon Levine has been as a leader and where he leaves DLA as a firm today!!

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. If this post’s photos of industry leaders and young staff is any indication, the adage rings true.
These young padwans are in good hands with Knight Frank senior management. As mentors and powerful industry voices, our #global and #local leaders have decades of experience between them.
They offer many opportunities for #nextgen to write their own Knight Frank stories and chart their own successful #realestate career paths to be proud of.
Set goals. Reach out. Ask questions. Seek answers. Break new ground.
The future shines bright.
Congratulations on 30 years, Gibson! What a huge accomplishment!
