Every year giffgaffers have the opportunity to take five paid volunteering days - in person or virtually - to give back and support the local community. Last week more than 100 of us volunteered in one form or another. Around 30 people donned a high vis and litter picker in support of Keep Britain Tidy, others rolled up their sleeves at the local allotment to support Mind and some helped out Trinity Homeless Projects by cooking, gardening and painting. One of our volunteers, Kate Hatcher, said that "listening to stories from residents at Olympic House (the temporary homeless shelter run by Trinity) was the highlight of my week and has given me a deeper understanding of the issues faced by people experiencing homelessness. I'm proud that our efforts mean that people now have a space to relax and receive support in." It's such an enriching day, and also a great reason to bring us all together.

There's no denying it: there are folks struggling right now. It's messy out there, and it can feel like there's no reprieve from all the nastiness. Social media certainly doesn't help at times (and yes, I am aware of the irony of using social media while decrying negative effects.) Some of our agency partners are overwhelmed with requests for service. There is something we can do about it. I'll give you the Cole's Notes version of the starfish story. A man throwing land-bound starfish back into the sea tells a skeptical passerby that his action didn't save ALL the creatures, but made a difference to the ones he tossed back. And that is why, if world and local events are getting to you, give volunteering a shot. Few of us have the power and influence to sit down those who do and say "Stop that. Fix this. Help them." I know I wish I did. But what you can do is learn how to say on a smaller level, "Please don't do that. It's ruining the environment. See?" "Let's get those people into a shelter." "Would you like me to repair that door? I can." Will it make a difference on the world-wide scale? Maybe not. But you have just shown someone that dumping their trash on the rail trail is not good for the animals that live near it. You've helped someone survive on the streets for another week or month. You've helped a struggling single parent make their home more secure. You've helped someone. Someone who may feel like paying it forward in the future. It may not have been a grand gesture, but you made a difference to that starfish. Come and see who would love for you to join their organization as a volunteer. https://buff.ly/48p5ewI You can also go there if you are a registered non-profit and would like to sign up with us to help you get the people you need. #CommunityBuilding #HelpingHands #VolunteeringIsGoodForYou #VolunteersWanted #ThoughtfulThursday #candoattitude #starfishstory Peterborough and the Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce Peterborough County Trent University Careerspace Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough

Getting children involved in volunteering is a great way to teach them empathy, responsibility, and the importance of giving back to their community. Here are some ways to encourage children to volunteer: 🖍️ Find age-appropriate activities: Choose volunteer opportunities that are suitable for your child's age and abilities. Younger children can participate in simple activities like drawing cards for nursing home residents or helping to sort donated items. 🐾 Align with their interests: Find volunteer opportunities that match your child's interests. For example, if they love animals, consider volunteering at a local animal shelter or pet adoption event. 🎒 Participate in school or youth organization projects: Many schools and youth organizations, such as scouting groups, offer volunteer opportunities for children. Encourage your child to get involved in these projects. 👪 Make it a family activity: Plan a family volunteer day where everyone participates in a project together, such as cleaning up a local park or serving meals at a houseless shelter. Remember to choose volunteer activities that are safe, well-supervised, and appropriate for your child's age and maturity level. Encourage their involvement, but don't force them to participate if they are not comfortable or interested. 👨👩👧👦 #NationalVolunteerMonth #FamilyVolunteering #HENSLEE #peopleops

A Call to Service and the Benefits of Volunteering. Speaking at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” It goes without saying that volunteering is good for others, but what if I told you that doing good is also good for you? It’s true. Giving of your time, energy, and effort often comes with big returns. #health #volunteer What’s good for others is often also good for you, body and mind. Volunteering can help you in these ways: • It combats depression. • It improves self-confidence. • It helps you stay physically active. • It increases happiness. • It provides a sense of purpose.

Fervently advocating for the recognition and appreciation of VCSE organisations and their impact, while exploring how transformation and innovation can be leveraged to reduce health inequalities within communities.
We have been in operation for over 20 years and we are still asked, "What is it that you do?" It is a very good question, however, a better question to ask would be "what is it that you don't do?". Having been involved with SNVB for a few years, I can assure you that there isn't much that we don't do. We don't just organise journeys for our passengers to attend their medical appointments. We don't just ensure that community members have access to food. We don't just maintain gardens for community members who are no longer able to because of their health or circumstances. We build relationships with our members. We listen when they feel that no-one else is listening. We reassure them that they are not a nuisance. We support them when they have no one else to turn to. We ensure that they are not sat at home in the dark without any heating because they are scared that they cannot afford the increased energy costs. We assure them that we will help them and follow it through to ensure that they receive the help and support that they are entitled to. We assist them with accessing information online because they either don't have the technical know how or the equipment to do it themselves. The number of times that one of our volunteer drivers has turned up at a passengers property to find that they are not answering. Anyone else might assume that the passenger has gone out or found another way of attending their medical appointment. We have saved the lives of seven passengers because we do not assume. Not ever. Many charities will face closure because they are unable to continue with rising costs and inadequate funding from their local authority. Every charity is required and expected to keep doing more and more, for less. We do not work the hours we are paid for. We work DOUBLE the hours we are paid for. Yet, we find ourselves worrying about what charity is going to close next because the impact that it will have on their community will be hugely detrimental. If you have taken the time to read this, THANK YOU. For charities it isn't a case of "use us or lose us", it is a real case of "support us or lose us". If you are able to support SNVB in order to keep our community projects active then your help is very much appreciated and you can be assured that your donation, will be used to support those that need it most within our community.

As we approach the HOLIDAYS think about Volunteerism. My 2 organizations that I volunteer are Palo Alto Veterans Hospital and Students Rising Above. I enjoy giving back on account it brings smiles and joy to others. Volunteering during the holidays is a heartwarming way to give back to the community and spread joy. Here are some ideas for holiday volunteerism: Food Banks and Shelters: Many organizations, especially during the holidays, require extra hands to sort and distribute food to those in need. Consider volunteering at local food banks or homeless shelters. Toy Drives and Gift Wrapping: Participate in toy drives for underprivileged children. Help collect, wrap, and distribute gifts to ensure that every child experiences the joy of the holiday season. Soup Kitchens and Community Meals: Volunteer at soup kitchens or community meals that serve holiday dinners to those who may not have access to a festive meal. Senior Centers and Nursing Homes: Spend time with seniors who may be alone during the holidays. Organize activities, share stories, or assist with holiday decorations to bring cheer to their lives. Homeless Outreach: Consider participating in outreach programs that provide essentials like warm clothing, blankets, and hygiene kits to the homeless population. Where do you volunteer and what organizations need help please use comments to elaborate further. #ServeOthers #CharityWork #VolunteerOpportunity #SocialImpact #DoGood #Philanthropy #SpreadKindness #HelpingHands #ChangeMakers

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join Jennifer Parks on a Habitat for Humanity Chicago (HFHC) neighborhood tour. We explored two neighborhoods, Greater Grand Crossing and West Pullman, that have been significantly impacted by HFHC's initiatives. Serving on the Habitat for Humanity Chicago Board has given me a deeper perspective as it pertains to the impact that the organization has on a quarterly and yearly basis, yet, nothing compares to seeing the tangible outcomes of HFHC’s efforts and discussing its forward-looking vision. This experience left me invigorated and excited about the boundless potential of HFHC. For my contacts in the Chicago area who haven’t yet gotten involved with HFHC, I highly recommend that you consider doing so. HFHC’s strategic neighborhood approach includes four primary components: strengthening the neighborhood housing market, connecting the community, elevating neighborhood appeal, and enhancing the physical environment. These efforts are bolstered by ambitious five-year goals, which include increasing the number of houses built or rehabilitated by fourfold, reaching a total of 100 houses. Additionally, they aim to triple the number of participants in affordable homeownership programs, and double the number of volunteers, aiming for a total of 25,000 over five years. These ambitious initiatives are just the tip of the iceberg, and your involvement could make a significant difference! If you are interested in getting further plugged in, please reach out so I can connect you with the incredible team!
