How can Darjeeling tea help us reach net zero? A fascinating project by Alt Carbon, based in the Himalayan foothills, is using tea farms to remove carbon from the atmosphere. At the Futures Summit 2024, the organisation (founded by brothers Shrey Agarwal and Sparsh Agarwal) struck a deal with NextGen CDR, a company with one of the world's biggest carbon removal portfolios. Together, they will deliver valuable carbon credits to companies all around the world, playing what NextGen's K Kartick calls a "vital role" in the race to net zero. The project has the potential to revolutionise the Darjeeling tea industry too, which is itself affected by climate change. Alt Carbon might just be able to transform a heritage industry into a beacon of climate action. As Professor Sambuddha Misra says, "it's an exciting time to be in Darjeeling!"
