Scholars at EMBL have discovered that human medications, which typically inhibit gut bacteria when isolated, have a reduced impact when these bacteria form communities. The study examined how 30 drugs affected 32 species of gut bacteria, revealing that drug-resistant bacteria can protect sensitive species through "cross-protection." This communal defence allows bacteria to thrive despite drug presence. "Up to half of the affected species remained unaffected in the community," noted co-author Sarela Garcia-Santamarina. However, at higher drug concentrations, this protection breaks down, leading to "cross-sensitization," where resistant bacteria become vulnerable. The study opens doors to possibly tailoring prescriptions to minimize drug side effects on the gut microbiome.
