We love having these awesome hidden spots serving world class artisan product - but if we want to keep them, we need to: - level the playing field in terms of taxation and the ATO to be a bit more broad minded (as tax payers we should demand this. UK's craft beer industry is facing a tough time as the number of breweries going into insolvency surged by 82% over the last year. According to accounting firm Mazars, 69 UK breweries went insolvent in 2021, up from 38 in 2020. Greenwich-based Brew by Numbers, Peckham Rye-based Brick Brewery, Love Lane brewery in Liverpool and Bethnal Green-based Boxcar Brewery were among those that went into administration. The smaller craft breweries suffered the most as Mazars stated that they faced an oversaturated market, high interest rates and soaring inflation. This comes as a major blow to the UK's craft beer industry, which has been thriving in recent years. #beerindustry #beernews #hospitalityindustry

CAMRA Calls On Government For Support Following Spate Of Bad News For Breweries Suffolk brewer Adnams has begun the process of calling in advisers to explore options to raise capital to secure its financial future, in a statement they said: “As a business of more than 150 years, and ever mindful of the challenges faced by the hospitality and brewing industries in recent times, the company is continually proactive in seeking ways to ensure that the business is even more resilient for the years to come.” In September 2023, the company reported operating losses in the first half of the year to £2.4 million, compared to a £811,000 loss in the same period 2022. As the sector wheels from high energy costs, and falling footfall Elland Brewery, based in Yorkshire, which saw its 1872 Porter awarded the Champion Beer of Britain five times, is facing liquidation. According to a recent filing, a virtual meeting of the creditors of Elland Brewery is being proposed by the directors of the company. The virtual meeting will be held via Zoom, on 16 February at 11.15am and a meeting of shareholders has been called and will be held prior to the virtual meeting of creditors, to consider passing a resolution for voluntary winding up of the company. CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona commented: “To hear that Elland Brewery is facing liquidation just six months after their 1872 Porter was crowned CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain 2023 is a major cause for concern. This, coupled with the reports that Adnams has been working with a management consultancy to explore options to shore up its finances – including the possibility of an injection of private capital – is a one-two punch at the heart of the UK brewing industry. “The news raises the issue of fair competition, access to market and consumer choice. CAMRA does not want any brewery or cider producer to close their doors for good, be it a contemporary small independent brewer or larger family-owned establishments with decades of history. “The worrying news that two prestigious, award-winning breweries are both facing pressure to remain trading and survive is indicative of the wider problems the brewing and pub trade are experiencing. CAMRA, along with the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) and the Independent Family Brewers of Britain (IFBB), is calling on the Government to increase Draught Relief to 20% from its current figure of 9.2% in the Chancellor’s upcoming Budget. Cutting tax specifically on draught beer and cider in pubs would encourage people to support their community local, and help secure jobs and businesses in the pub and beer sector – particularly small and independent breweries that sell more of their products into pubs and taprooms. “CAMRA is encouraging everyone to email their MPs, asking them to support the ‘Make it 20%’ campaign and call on the Government to show their support for pubs, social clubs, breweries and cider producers. At the Prancing Pony Brewery, we stand behind the Independent Brewers Association and the call to save independent breweries. For our Government to act now, and this is why. 1. Breweries have a unproportionally high 'additional tax' in the form of Excise. Excise increases twice a year, it is the 3rd highest in the world, and represents the major ingredient in beer in Australia. The Excise tax requires a fundamental reform to come in line with the rest of the world. 2. Our government needs to remember that the 600 plus independent breweries provide over 50% of all Beer jobs, while only representing around 5% of all Australian Beer. 3. The Independent breweries and their venues add around $2billion to the economy. 4. Indie brewers are innovative and responsive. Beer is the beverage of choice for moderate alcohol consumption and Indie brewers have been innovative in creating many nonalcoholic options for customers, which clearly sits high on our Government's Agenda on health measures in alcohol. 5. We are so much more than just a manufacturing enterprise, we create events, festivals, we are the social meeting place, and many, if not all, Indie breweries are engaged with local charities and support their community, the arts and music in a way no other business does. 6. We create 'first' jobs for Aussie youth - while on school holidays, or after they leave school in the form of dishies, glassies, in the kitchen or in the production. 7. We put Karma kegs on and donate the proceeds to many worthwhile causes, and we have the back of many patrons that may need a bit more than a pint when they visit their local brewery. 8. We are resilient, and we are very much part of the Australian way of life that makes Australia authentically unique, BUT - We can't do it without you. We need support, and we need it now, so please repost and comment, so this discussion will become more than a discussion and will lead to a serious consideration of the IBA's proposal to our government. We are not asking to abolish taxes, we just ask to receive a fair go in running our businesses. If you can support your local brewery, please do it in any way you can, get a pint of beer or drink a non-beer, buy some merchandise if you need a new T'shirt, have a meal and buy a 4 pack while you are there or simply drop in say 'Hi'. Were the industry growing, it would need headspace, so to speak, for future expansion. Here’s Bart: “When you’re growing rapidly, excess capacity is a good thing so you can keep up with that growth. Athletic has a lot of excess capacity right now with the purchase of that former Ballast Point facility, but no one thinks that’s an issue. So the ratio in the mid-2010s was different because brewers were rapidly growing into it. As I pointed out in 2015, the 2012 and 2014 ratios look the same, but 2014 production was actually bigger than 2012 total capacity. “So you need to understand the capacity number in the context of its time. If we were growing 18% again right now, even 51% might not be that bad (at 18% you’d use up all that excess capacity in 4 years), but at static or negative growth, it’s a lot worse, because it represents investments that aren’t being utilized.” I don’t have a lot more to add to this, except to say that if you want to open a brewery in the next few years, you might consider starting a contract brewery or alternating proprietorship. Beer Market in the UK - Brewery closures continue across the UK The first quarter of this year has recorded a -38 net closure rate across the UK compared to the last quarter of 2023. Now, there are a total of 1,777 active breweries in the UK, compared to the 1,815 that were recorded last year Some regions were experiencing overall growth compared to this time last year, with the East seeing a +11 net growth in the past 12 months. Last month when Big Shed Brewing announced they had been placed into voluntary administration, the South Australian community rallied behind them. The outpouring of support and generosity from the public, industry, partners and other local businesses was invaluable, and Big Shed are now out of administration, and plan to pour beers for years to come. We’ve seen how important it is to get behind local businesses, and as a state - we are really good at it! However, the support for not only Big Shed but all SA breweries can't stop there. There are currently over 80 independent breweries in operation across the state, many of which are small family run businesses that employ locally and are more than just a brewery, they are part of their community. The US is home to thousands of breweries that produce hundreds of millions of barrels of #beer each year. Between 2008 and 2021, the total number of American breweries grew each year (even as the amount of beer produced annually in the US has declined since 2012). In 2022, those breweries contributed over $2.7 billion in federal tax revenue, according to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). That revenue is more than double the federal taxes on domestic and imported wine ($1.1 billion). The vast majority of American breweries are #smallbusinesses — in 2021, 98% of them employed fewer than 100 people. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that American breweries employed 94,107 people in 2021, a 238% increase since 2001, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated annual brewery payroll at $3.4 billion in 2020. Beer production also impacts other industries, particularly agriculture — the USDA estimates the economic value of hops grown for beer at $662 million.
