Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a pivotal day in America’s history. Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth commemorates the day Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay in 1865 and decreed that the more than 25,000 enslaved Black men and women were free by executive order. This announcement came two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which had yet to be implemented in all Confederate-controlled territories. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the delayed justice many men, women, and children had to endure. In celebration of freedom, equality, and achievements, today is a day to reflect on all aspects of American history and look ahead to a future of continued progress. #Juneteenth #TouchdownPR

CALL FOR PROPOSALS Sisters in Sync is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the development of an Advocacy Toolkit Framework aimed at strengthening research and evidence-based programs and practices to build an understanding of the disparities and challenges faced by racialized and religious minority communities, specifically for Black women and girls ages 14-65 residing in Canada who experience assaults, microaggressions, and discriminations deeply rooted in dangerous, racist and misogynistic ideologies. We seek innovative proposals that will contribute to a comprehensive toolkit designed to educate and advocate for the rights and well-being of Black girls and women. Proposals should have intersectional approaches to advocacy, emphasizing and acknowledging the unique challenges faced by Black girls and women in different spheres of life. All Expression of Interest must not exceed 1 page and should be submitted as a document in PDF format by February 14, 2024, at 11:59 PM (EST). WoMin concluded a decade in 2023! We look ahead to the next decade of activism and organising on a continent stricken with crises - ecological, climate, debt, finance, and reproductive, to name just a few. In the midst of this, we see women and their communities fighting land grabs, defending their right to be in the midst of a deadly economic system, and living some of the alternatives which must guide development choices if the planet and all of its species have any chance of survival. As WoMin closes off 2023, we acknowledge & and celebrate the leading women activists in the more than 100 sites of resistance across 16 countries in Southern, East, West, and Central Africa we work alongside. You teach, inspire, and guide our political analysis and actions and have done so for more than a decade. In solidarity and hope always, The WoMin African Alliance team.
