This is misogynoir in full effect. The Tory party's biggest donor said that seeing Diane Abbott makes him want to hate all black women and that she should be shot. The worst thing is, we know that there will be absolutely no repercussions for this: 👉🏽 He won't face any criminal proceedings 👉🏽 The Tory party will continue to take his money 👉🏽 Other companies will continue to do business with him 👉🏽 He'll maintain all his social connections and access to influential networks 👉🏽 If he had an MBE, the institution wouldn't be asking for it back. The combination of race inequality and gender inequality means that men like this can get away with comments like this with little to no consequence. But comments like this feed into hatred, violence and apathy towards black women. What can we do about it? Well, our work NEEDS to be intersectional. When we are looking at outcomes in our organisations in regards to retention, representation and pay, it's often black women who are suffering the most. So ensuring that black women's voices are heard and that they are considered and centred in our efforts for equality is essential. And not just in response to incidents like this, but as a core part of our inclusion strategy. Stephen Lawrence day, Heard of it?   Stephen Lawrence day is a legal legacy in response to his tragic murder.   A young black man who was murdered in an unprovoked, racist attack in 1993. The subsequent police investigation into his death was marred by professional incompetence, institutional racism, and a failure of leadership.   Stephen’s parents, Doreen and Neville Lawrence, campaigned tirelessly for justice and accountability.   The Macpherson report, published nearly two years later, had a profound impact on British law and society. It made 70 recommendations, of which 67 led to specific changes in practice or law within two years of publication.   The new legislation extended protection of the law to victims of discrimination by public bodies for the first time. It clarified that #discrimination could occur indirectly as well as directly, but does this translate to the day to day practice? Have the recommendations really been felt by the black community?   Public bodies were placed under a general duty to promote equality of opportunity and good race relations, is there enough being doing?   While strides have been made, challenges remain, including the need for greater representation of black individuals in leadership roles and continued efforts to combat racism.   Does your school recognise this? Are your pupils learning about who he is? The UK higher education sector continues to grapple with how to address racism. Stats like less than 1% of Professors are Black continue to be regularly repeated, yet little progress seems to have been paid to address this. This important correspondence by Angela Obasi in The Lancet outlines how Athena SWAN an equality charter for universities and colleges, have been awarded to institutions that have done little to address institutional racism. Using the case study of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine receiving a Silver award from Athena SWAN she highlights "at the point of award, LSTM had never promoted a Black female researcher at any grade. A gender equality award in the face of such failure to recognise, nurture, and reward Black female talent, in an institution that conducts over two-thirds of its research in Africa, casts a grim shadow over the value of these charter marks, and on the intersectionality that these charters claim as a core principle." If UK higher education is going to address institutional racism, urgent and radical change is needed, and the push for change should not shouldered only by people excluded. As a community, we've encountered instances of racism and microaggressions, particularly from a white male micromanager. It's disheartening when our experiences are overlooked or dismissed.
