Girl Scout cookie season is officially here. Can you imagine a world without Thin Mints®, Tagalongs® and Do-si-dos®? Sadly, they were once at risk. There was a time in the mid-1970s when the Girl Scouts were struggling and their future looked uncertain. Fortunately, Frances Hesselbein came to the rescue. With membership falling, and the organization in a state of serious decline, Mrs. Hesselbein put sound management practices in place. During her twenty-four-year tenure, Girl Scout membership quadrupled to nearly three and a half million, diversity more than tripled, and the organization was transformed into what Peter Drucker described as “the best-managed organization around.” Hesselbein accomplished the amazing turnaround with a paid staff of 6,000 and 730,000 volunteers. The principles Hesselbein followed align with those of a Connection Culture. 1. Create an inspiring identity 2. Promote human value 3. “When we had our son, a lot of people congratulated my wife saying, ‘You can relax now…you have a son in the house’ and my wife and I laughed at their mentality but realized that this is how people still think. I was overjoyed that I had a son, but I knew I wanted to raise him right. It’s okay if he cries and if he shows his emotions — my wife and I are constantly telling him that crying doesn’t make him any less of a man. We teach him to respect girls as equals and even in little things like a game of football or cricket to not make fun of them — that’s where it all begins. Just the other day at the park, they were playing football and right before this small girl was about to kick the ball, a boy shouted — ‘Don’t kick like a girl…we’ll lose’ and everyone began to laugh. That small girl looked so shaken, but before anyone could say anything my son went up to her and said, ‘Kick like a girl…that’s how we’ll show them how to win!’ and I promise you, that girl was beaming — she played like a real rockstar. As a father, I felt proud because the boys we raise today are the men of tomorrow. Every day we hear things about women empowerment and feminism but I’m trying to teach my son that women don’t need to be empowered— they already are. By trying to empower them, we’re proving that they’re weaker and need us to help them. Truth is, women are ready to rule the world as is…all they need is the world to be fair to them —to give them the respect they deserve…whether it’s at home, at work, or out on the streets.”

"RESEARCH SNAPSHOT Interviewed 276 Black women across 17 countries who speak Spanish, Portuguese and Kreyól; Mapped 309 Black women-led initiatives. Of these, 57% comprise Black women only; 33 percent, Black women and men; and the remaining 10 percent, LGBTQI. Organization types include collectives, associations, community-based organizations, unions, cooperatives, and networks as well as NGOs. Many are not registered. Observed 25 spaces of Black activism using participant observation at conferences, educational forums, and workshops, both on and offline; Interviewed representatives of Latin American women’s funds; Interviewed 20 academics, activists, artists, healers, therapists and guardians of Black memory; Consulted 102 reports or articles about racial and gender justice; and, Commissioned several articles from prominent thought leaders in trans, decolonial, and Black feminist activism."
