Today, April 16, 2024, we are celebrating Purple Up Day from Italy as we travel in support of our Military Affiliated Youth Centers across this beautiful country! Did you know that Boys & Girls Clubs of America has partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard to provide world-class youth development programs, training, and resources to military-affiliated Youth Centers and geographically dispersed military youth around the world? I hope you will join me in wearing purple for Purple UP! Day! The goal of Purple UP! Day is to demonstrate our support for military youth and their families, regardless of service affiliation. You might ask, “Why purple?” Purple is the traditional color that signifies the blending of all military services into a common goal or outcome.   When a military member serves, the family also serves. Military youth frequently get reassigned every few years – meaning they could attend anywhere from four to nine new schools over the course of their youth – while continually acclimating to new friends and new surroundings.     Many times, military youth are uprooted during the school year or at critical times in their lives – such as the last year of high school – or to places where English might not be the primary language. While this might sound exciting to some, it can also add to the stress of deployment as their parents defend our freedom and way of life.  The services BGCA provide to military youth both on-installation and off-installation through Mission: Youth Outreach contribute to the building of resiliency within our military kids and teens.

Today, Rick Yarosh and I engage in Circles with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton, CA. Circle is one of the oldest human connection practices in history, stretching back more than 400,000 years. By definition, a Circle is a secure space created to invite the sharing of stories, perspectives and emotions. It is designed so everyone can see each other and hear all voices. It requires mutual consensus to listen and, often in sequence, respond to a central question. The Circle format has no beginning and no end. No one is in a position of prominence, which serves to encourage individuals to speak honestly about their feelings and beliefs. A Navy SEAL will spend his life training and sacrificing to reach and maintain the pinnacle of human performance. This is required to serve amongst the ranks of our most elite warriors. If a SEAL can no longer serve due to injuries sustained in combat or training, you can imagine the loss of identity. It's part of why the Navy SEAL Foundation provides programs to assist with transition. In fact, this initiative is so important, it's one of our five pillars of support. The caliber of person who earns their spot amongst our nation's toughest and most elite warriors is someone who would be a valued addition at any institution. It's our job to prepare them for that chapter of their lives and give them the skills to perform in the private sector. If the holidays are a time that inspires you to support organizations that truly stretch your giving to provide the most significant impact to those who need it, I would implore you to support the Navy SEAL Foundation and, more importantly, these men and their families who give so much and who may be apart from one another right now.
