Identifying Impacts, Risks and Opportunities is a critical step of the CSRD journey. This step goes hand-in-hand with identifying material sustainability matters (also known as ESRS sub-sub-topics). Under the CSRD, companies must identify key sustainability matters and evaluate them from the double materiality perspective. Companies will typically adopt a qualitative approach. This means reviewing internal reports and conducting stakeholder engagement across business operations and the value chain. Examples of engagements include workshops, surveys and interviews - as well as consultations with experts. But this is not the gold standard. The gold standard is this: to complement the qualitative approach with a quantitative analysis that offers objective, science-backed and data-driven insights. That way, you get the best of both worlds. As companies prepare to report under the CSRD, many will wonder - is it best to take a qualitative or a quantitative approach? According to EFRAG, the technical adviser to the European Commission, both are allowed. But one is the gold standard. Here is a direct quote: “Should the assessment of IROs rely on quantitative information? Where possible, yes, as quantitative measures of IROs are objective evidence of their materiality”.
