🗺 🤯 Did you know we’ve mapped the locations of over 2.5+ million individual business assets around the world? This has numerous benefits - but specifically helps with the first step of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), which requires businesses to locate where their operations interface with nature. Through our partnership with Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) - an alliance of four world-renowned organisations (BirdLife International, Conservation International, IUCN and UNEP-WCMC), we can also locate how these 2.5+ million individual business assets interface with nature across: 📍 300,000+ Protected Areas 📍 160,000+ Red List Species 📍 16,000+ Key Biodiversity Areas And if that wasn’t enough, we can break down these interfaces by region and asset type - making TNFD alignment a (data-packed) breeze. What’s more, if your company isn’t on our database, just send us your data and we’ll run the analysis for you. What are you waiting for?! (Every day we wait, another 82 species will go extinct*). Follow along to explore how GIST Impact supports businesses in their next step of TNFD alignment: evaluating their biodiversity impacts and dependencies. #COP16 #Biodiversity #TNFD #Sustainability *Source: https://lnkd.in/dJNUr8h Yara International

🚨🌪️ A wake-up call for business and nature. Hurricane Milton is increasing in strength and will make landfall in Florida in the next 24 hours. This powerful storm, which morphed into a Category 5 hurricane alarmingly quickly, has gripped the world’s attention and is set to create devastating damage and destruction. This destruction comes in many forms and extends beyond the tragic implications it is likely to have on people’s lives and homes. By looking at the hurricane’s trajectory, our analysis shows some of the business assets that are at risk along its projected path. In addition, this hurricane will also impact Key Biodiversity Areas, Protected Areas, and Red List species. The science is clear: Hurricane Milton was severely intensified by climate change. When we disrupt the balance of nature, people suffer, nature is further degraded, and business resilience is compromised. Today is a stark reminder of the unforgiving force of nature and the risks it can pose to society - as well as the businesses that operate within it. 🔍 What our map shows: Magenta lines are the project path of tropical storm force winds; shading indicates probability from 50% (lightest) to >90% (darkest). Shaded green areas represent Key Biodiversity Areas (data provided via our partner - Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT)). 🔍 Our analysis shows: Businesses ▶ Number of public companies with affected operations: >1,500 ▶ Number of affected operations sites: >23,000 ▶ Max number of affected sites for individual company: 648 ▶ Key affected sectors: Electricity Services, Natural Gas, Retail Banks, Fruit Orchards, Manufacturing, Real Estate Development Nature (via IBAT) ▶ Number of affected Key Biodiversity Areas: 26 ▶ Number of affected areas protected for nature: 772 ▶ Number of affected IUCN Red List (vulnerable) species: 83 ▶ Number of affected IUCN Red List (endangered) species: 62 ▶ Number of affected IUCN Red List (critically endangered) species: 33 #milton #sustainability #climatechange #climate #climaterisk

"How deep is our understanding of - and the focus of our systems on - recognising environmental externalities?" Yesterday, our Founder and CEO Pavan Sukhdev had the honour and privilege of chairing a panel discussion at the The Royal Society on the topic of Financial Risk. Held as part a broader two day event titled "How does ecological risk relate to commercial risk?" and chaired by Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta, the panel produced some startling insights on the importance of taking nature into account as part of wider financial decision-making processes. Here are the key takeaways: 🏛 Nature-related risk is systemic and fundamental: "the most important thing... is that this makes it into our traditional way of thinking about risk. Not only having a sustainability office, but really having it ingrained into the core operations of a financial institution." Marc Reinke (Head of the Sustainable Finance Office, DNB) 📉 Financial institutions are exposed to large amounts of unseen risks: "we did a piece of work with HSBC, understanding the impact of a very realistic scenario of water stress on their portfolio of 50 South East Asian heavy industry corporates. We saw that the majority of that portfolio went from investment grade to non-investment grade as a result of that scenario." Dr Nina Seega (Director, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)) 🌪 Improved data sharing and education is critical to keep insurance viable: "For me, the biggest thing is education of government and policy holders. As insurers, we hold a lot of data... and we want to share that data to make an impact. Otherwise, this is just going to get worse... the devastation is real." Waseem Malik (Chief Claims Officer, Aviva) Watch the full streams of yesterday's and today's events here: https://lnkd.in/ekBREk6f Please visit our website to find out more how financial institutions and corporates can mitigate their risks and integrate nature-based decision-making into their processes: https://lnkd.in/evaZcafH #sustainability #biodiversity #nature #externalities #naturepositive #sustainablefinance #NGFS #GreeningFinance
