Connect with the Right People: Starting from scratch without any financial backing or family connections can be challenging, but it’s entirely possible to succeed with the right approach. In the fashion industry, clients often rely on stylists to curate and produce shoots, making them valuable contacts for aspiring photographers and filmmakers. By networking with stylists and showcasing your talents, you can establish yourself as a reliable collaborator, opening doors to opportunities despite starting with limited resources. 2. Build a Strong Portfolio: When you’re starting with little to no funds, building a portfolio can seem daunting, but it’s essential for gaining traction in the industry. Diversifying your portfolio is key, as it demonstrates your versatility and attracts a broader range of clients. While editorials may offer exposure, the real growth and financial stability often come from campaigns and advertisements. New work is out for Farah 💎 (why fashion shoots are hectic) 1. You'll always do stills + videos. To maximise budgets, fashion shoots include both photos and videos. I'm not talking about BTS photos or quick snaps, but proper campaign shots for retail, OOH, and media channels. Managing the schedule to get both is manic, but you get there. Solution: Get a stills and a video team that are easy to work with each other. They are ready to shoot at any point but also give the other team the space to do their work properly. If you need a sudden relight for stills because things don't work, have motion to jump in, turn on their lights, and shoot. Miss no time. 2. Not many people can shoot fashion well. I heard that when I first started. I thought it was mostly because the industry is a bit elitist and wants to maintain that perspective. But it's true. Fashion requires an eye for detail that not many people have. Solution: Be always on the research. I spent 1-2 hours on Saturday researching for new talent. There are so many creative people out there, we have no excuses for not finding the best. 3. You've to go through so much. Getting out your checklist, and going through all 50 different outfits, while mixing up scenes, set design, lighting techniques, etc. Something is missing because it didn't got delivered, a shirt is the wrong size, the cast member got a bit late. Every change on the schedule can be a killer of it. Solution: Have Plans B, C, and W. Develop a relationship with your client where you can communicate and decide together what's less prioritised and can be dropped to meet the wrap time. Conclusion: I love fashion shoots.
