Let's talk about a personal project I've picked back up. I first thought up Riff when I was teaching my standup comedy class at ImprovBoston, as a way to give my students a daily writing prompt each day to help fuel the creative juices. Like Twitter if each day had a singular theme everyone could tweet about... and without all the "X"-ness. "Tell the story of your most awkward date." "What's your pet peeve?" "What's your favorite movie and why?" Designing a comedy-based social network around a single universal prompt that shifted each day led to some interesting logic problems on the backend, and it's been really fun to pick it back up! Hoping to make the frontend a bit prettier and add in some more functionality for users! Check out the repo if you're interested:

In the previous lectures of the System Design Workshop, we have learned about the core concepts, patterns, and theories of system design and conducted a case study on the URL Shortener System. In today's lecture, we will do a case study on a social media platform, Twitter. The link to the video will be provided in the comment box. But before watching the lecture, take a moment to think about the social media platform—how it can be created. Then, when you study the case in the lecture, your attention and learning will be enhanced, and your understanding will be stronger. If you like the video, don’t forget to share it with your friends. Stay tuned to Stack Learner for more informative content like this. Video Link: https://lnkd.in/gdtyka3V #SystemDesign #TechLearning #CaseStudy #URLShortener #TwitterCaseStudy #StackLearner

This is the craziest Chrome extension. YouTube started hiding dislikes November 2021. For the last three years, I didn't know this existed. The Return YouTube Dislike Chrome Extension. It actually works! This thing has 5 million users and somehow I wasn't one of them until now. This is especially great for sentiment analysis. Get content ideas by seeing what ideas perform well and which ones don't. If a video has a lot of dislikes, that gives you ideas of what to stay away from. If the like to dislike ratio is good, then you have an idea of what to make. Or if you just want to see how the streets are feeling. #chromeextensions #youtubehacks #sentimentanalysis #buildinpublic

I think it's important for people to understand how different #mastodon is from other social networks, even LinkedIn. Mastodon's default view is a reverse chronological list of posts from tags and people that you are subscribed to. There is no Mastodon company that needs an algorithm forcing "engaging" content at you. For example, my feed shows me what people are saying about #python, #linux, #suse, #retrogaming, and there is a surprisingly large amount of #dogs content :) On the flip side, while Mastodon is a great place to share, but it will not feed your dopamine receptors in terms of likes and engagement on your content. The federated nature also means that there is no central authority that can come back and strip mine the user base for profits using hostile features or dark patterns. https://lnkd.in/euPqDyDS

Broadcast/video production has advanced by leaps and bounce since I started out more than 2 decades ago. When I learned broadcasting in university in 1997, we were still using heavy broadcast cameras and deck-to-deck editing machines. Visual effects like a wipe had to be done in a post production studio. Now, all of these can be shot and edited on a mobile phone. Not only can you shoot on your phone, an AI can edit your footage too! Technical skill sets that I learned like deck to deck editing is now obsolete. What is still relevant however is the storytelling and editorial skills. That thankfully an AI still hasn't learned to do well yet.
You don't need expensive gear to make your idea happen. Just start where you are, wherever that is, with whatever you have. The sooner you start trying, experimenting and learning the better 🙏🏽 Image via Janis Ozolins 💥

F**k Your Fear & Ditch Your Doubt. Kick your fears in the nuts and create your next offer with an easy to use, tried, tested and proven 3 step system, creating your launch within 5 days
Tony Robbins says, “There’s no lack of resources, there is only a lack of Resourcefulness.” Steven Bartlett says, “Start where you are…!” Both of these guys are richer than you and I will ever be, probably! Tho only thing missing on your journey is a goal, vision and a plan to carry it out. Urgency is the missing link in most businesses, including mine. Most of us have fabulous ideas, then waste time obsessing about shit that doesn’t earn us any money. Waiting for the perfect time, endlessly delaying taking action. Action gets results. Even zero results proves a point, that your ideas need refinement. But you can only refine your results by taking action. No action = No results. Simple. Most people are held back by fear of failure, not realising no action guarantees failure. Failure is only permanent if you quit, otherwise it’s a state of your own mind. FEAR what’s your definition? My favourite is Fuck Everything And Run. Emphasis on the Fight or Flight response. Here’s a few to get you started: Face Everything And Rise Focus Energy And Resist Foster Every Ambition Relentlessly So what’s your excuse?
