🌞 Exploring the Future of Distributed Solar PV in Cambodia 🌍 Cambodia’s energy sector is rapidly evolving, with distributed solar power playing an increasingly critical role in the country’s energy transition. 💡 🔋 Why Distributed Solar? Cambodia’s electricity demand is growing steadily, and while hydropower and coal have traditionally powered the grid, distributed solar PV is emerging as a game-changer. The country’s abundant sunlight makes it an ideal location for solar energy, and with recent policy initiatives, both residential and commercial entities are adopting rooftop solar installations. 🛠️ Regulatory Progress Recent regulations by Cambodia’s Electricité du Cambodge (EDC) have set the stage for growth in distributed solar, allowing companies and homes to generate their own electricity while selling excess power back to the grid. However, the specifics of net metering and feed-in tariffs are still being fine-tuned, especially for those who adopt rooftop solar systems. 💼 Opportunities for Businesses Businesses across Cambodia, particularly in sectors like manufacturing and real estate, are showing growing interest in solar. Renewable Energy in Pakistan: A Concerning Deviation According to Pakistan's Alternate Renewable Energy Policy 2019, Pakistan has to achieve the following aims: 1. 20% of energy capacity from alternative and renewable energy sources by 2025. 2. 30% of energy capacity from alternative and renewable energy sources by 2030. To achieve these targets, the government has offered various incentives, such as: ▪ Competitive selection for all projects ▪ Obligations for developers to use local components and employ local labor ▪ Grid impact studies to ensure technical and economic viability Contrary to the Alternate Renewable Energy Policy 2019, the latest IGCEP'24 reveals a concerning deviation from Pakistan's renewable energy goals. Despite having a current electricity generation demand of 31,000 MW, the IGCEP'24 projects a higher demand of 41,000 MW for FY24, attributed to the optimization of Dasu Dam and Bhasha Dam. However, this excess energy cannot be exported or sold due to Pakistan's inadequate Tariff Structure and insufficient Transmission Lines, rendering it uncompetitive in the regional market. Shockingly, the IGCEP'24 excludes cost-effective Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) sources, contradicting its fundamental principle of prioritizing least-cost options. The VRE share has been significantly reduced to 13.3% from 29.6%, substantially decreasing the contribution of wind, solar, and other VRE sources to Pakistan's energy mix. Notably, the solar share is projected to drop to 10% by 2034, contradicting the government's target of exceeding 30% VRE share. This decision will have far-reaching adverse impacts, including: ·        Difficulty in accessing energy from centralized generation ·        Increased reliance on imported fossil fuels, impacting the economy ·        Higher energy costs and debt ·        Environmental impacts and pollution ·        Concerns about Pakistan's commitment to renewable energy and global climate change mitigation goals The exclusion of cost-effective VRE sources may lead to energy insecurity, perpetuating reliance on imported fuels and hindering Pakistan's progress towards a sustainable energy future. #RenewableEnergy #Pakistan #EnergyPolicy #Sustainability #ClimateChange #EnergySecurity #VariableRenewableEnergy #IGCEP #AREPolicy2019

The Australian government has granted environmental approval for Lightsource bp, a UK developer, to proceed with plans for Australia's largest solar farm and battery energy storage system. The Sandy Creek Solar Farm and battery project, located in New South Wales, will consist of a 750 MW solar farm coupled with up to a 750 MW/3,000 MWh battery storage system. Expected to generate 1.7 million MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to powering approximately 200,000 homes, the project will connect to the national grid via the proposed Elong Elong Energy Hub. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to boost renewable energy and create local jobs, with up to 600 jobs expected during the construction phase. Tunisia Boosts Its Green Energy with EBRD Support! 🌞 The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a €12.5 million loan to finance two 60 MW solar power plants in Tozeur and Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia. Developed by Scatec and Aeolus, these projects are a big step towards improving energy security and cutting carbon emissions in the country. Once up and running, these solar plants are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 108,000 tons per year, helping Tunisia move closer to a greener future.
