Unpredictable weather patterns, extreme temperatures, and irregular rainfall disrupt crop production, leading to financial strain on farmers.   Economic Downturn:   As climate change intensifies, the economic landscape of rural communities faces a downturn. Job insecurity becomes a prevailing concern as agricultural instability echos across various sectors. These kind of economic challenges poses a direct threat to the livelihoods of rural community members of Sindh.   Biodiversity in Peril:   In rural landscapes, climate change goes beyond economics. Biodiversity, crucial for ecosystem harmony, is under threat, disrupting the very foundations of rural life. As species struggle, the intricate balance sustaining communities is disturbed, impacting vital resources like crops and water. Tangible consequences emerge – uncertain resource availability and mounting costs. Preserving nature is not just altruism; it's safeguarding the essence of communities. Climate change isn't a distant scenario; it's an urgent concern requiring immediate attention and action.   Adaptation Expenses:   As rural communities strive to adapt to the evolving environment, there's a real financial toll. The climate and biodiversity crises are interconnected global challenges that threaten ecosystems, human health, and the planet's future. Rising temperatures from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are causing extreme weather, while habitat loss and species extinction are escalating. Is there something we can do? By investing in Natural Climate Solutions (NCS), we can create resilient landscapes, protect wildlife, and secure a healthier, more sustainable future for all. Our recently published White paper with World Economic Forum and Confederation of Indian Industry, titled “Unlocking Private Sector Investment into Natural Climate Solutions in India,” highlights why NCS are crucial for driving climate action – they have the potential to reduce global GHG emissions by a third by 2030. However, despite their substantial potential, of the $200 billion invested in these solutions only 18% comes from private entities, stressing the urgent need for increased private sector investment. It is estimated that $7 trillion of annual finance flows negatively impact nature, and of this $5 trillion is from private sources – the private sectors responsibility for climate action cannot be overestimated. While private sector players in India have shown interest in investing in NCS, there is often confusion about the available instruments and how they align with business goals. We have worked with organisations across sectors to co-formulate this study, which aims to facilitate clarity on investment avenues and mobilisation of finance towards NCS in India. Public policies are crucial in the fight against climate change. They set the framework for sustainable practices, green technologies, and collective action. India has developed its policy response through missions and programs to reduce its climate vulnerability. On June 30, 2008, the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) was released. This comprehensive strategy includes eight sub-missions designed to adapt and enhance ecological sustainability in India's development path: National Solar Mission National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency National Mission for a Green India National Water Mission National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture National Mission on Sustainable Habitat National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change These initiatives are vital for building a sustainable future. The Climate Smart Villages (CSV) programe under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission’s (TNCCM) aegis is a path-breaking initiative across 11 pilot sites in Tamil Nadu's most climate-vulnerable districts. Through a collaborative, bottom-up strategy, this locally-led approach mainstreams climate action in development design through extensive discussions with line departments, local bodies, communities and sectoral experts. Needs-based interventions encompassing climate-resilient alternate livelihoods, waste management specifically targeting plastic waste, e-boats for tourism, and climate information centres, are being developed to address the challenges faced by marginalised communities which are further exacerbated by climate change. WRI India’s collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu under CSV has culminated the first future-ready development plan for a climate-smart village in Killai, Cuddalore district. Over these last several days, we witnessed one extreme weather event after another - devastating landslides in the once-lush forested region of Wayanad killing hundreds, the severe heat-wave in Ladakh leading to a week of flight cancellations, annual cloud-bursts in Himachal Pradesh leading to ravaging floods washing away densely populated hillsides, flight cancellations due to heavy rains in the National Capital - were just the headlines. Globally, the week was hottest in recorded history. Backlash against relentless tourism in Europe despite the heatwaves is a strange phenomenon as well. As climate crisis becomes severe with each passing day, I worry about the escalating implications. I dread putting a number to the sheer cost of these major and minor disasters - in terms of lives lost, trauma, damages to property and the massive inconvenience and safety concerns for people who must travel for work or otherwise. I feel the driving need to be aware and dive deep into sustainability - both in living (individual and the collective) and business practices. Through the ESG Bootcamp conducted by NSE Academy and Grant Thornton, I was able to get a perspective of the existing and emerging regulatory frameworks, dive deep into circular supply chains and engage in conversations with participants who brought their expertise and insights from diverse industries.
