Finland's Fur Farms Confront Bird Flu: 120,000 Animals Culled Finland, Europe's top fox fur producer, is grappling with bird flu outbreaks, resulting in the culling of 120,000 farmed foxes and minks across 13 farms (10 already completed). Bird flu cases emerged in seagulls in June, spreading to fur farm animals in July. Europe has faced its worst bird flu outbreak since late 2021, with concerns about potential human transmission. Finland, with about 400 fur farms and 1.3 million fur animals, faces renewed calls to ban the fur industry. Other nations like France, the Netherlands, and Denmark have already moved to ban fur farming due to pandemic and bird flu risks. Pandemic prevention requires that we take a significantly greater focus on the role of ecological damage from myriad pollution. We are not going to prevent a pandemic, by expanding the exposure of humans and animals to immune system harming toxicants like PFAS, plastics and pesticides. Yet we are continuing to expand the use of all of these. Makes you ask- are we really interested in pandemic prevention if we are unwilling to regulate appropriately? Indeed, behaviour will need to change.

This is the final published article in the latest online version of the journal One Health! #Guyana is the first #CARICOM and #Caribbean country to successfully conduct and publish a One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritisation (#OHZDP). This was a massive effort led by CIFOR - Center for International Forestry Research and a local NGO Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) in Guyana. Key takeaways include the close proximity of Guyana to #Brazil and #Venezuela with shared land borders and the inherent spillover from one country to another. Another is the use of #wildlife for #food and #trade and the diverse range of #wildlife species present in Guyana. Finally, a list of eight (8) #zoonoses were completed with the appropriate ranking. 1. Coronavirus & Viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) viruses 3. Hepatitis 4. Tuberculosis 5. The 194 #WHO Member States are currently discussing a #pandemicaccord. One of the articles highlights the One Health Approach and the need to consider the Human-Animal interface. The risk of animal viruses spilling over to humans is real, and reducing it will enhance #Pandemic prevention. Pandemic prevention with the One Health Approach is multifaceted. It includes strengthening local health systems to detect and treat the initial cases of zoonotic diseases, enhancing surveillance at the human-animal interface, improving veterinary health systems, increasing safety in food markets, wildlife, and biodiversity conservation, among other measures (this list is not exhaustive). Before the COVID-19 Pandemic, very few people knew about the pangolin. Now, more people are aware of the interconnectedness between Humans, Animals, and the Environment for health, well-being, and global health security.

Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza viruses are becoming increasingly flexible and are adapting to mammals in new ways that could have global consequences for humans, wildlife and livestock, according to a new study of a massive outbreak among elephant seals in Argentina in 2023.
