Great conference today in Dedeman Erbil hotel: Tapping into the Transformative Potential of Reparations for CRSV in Iraq: Reflecting on the #YSL and Opportunities to Further the Government of Iraq and UN's Joint Communiqué on the Prevention and Response to CRSV and Iraq's Women, Peace & Security Agenda. Many thanks to survivors for being there, as well as to our partners from #IOM, #UNAMI, Kurdistan Women´s Rights Defenders and Women for Peace Network, Iraqi and KRG officials and great NGOs, colleagues and friends. Key takeaways: more should be done to combat stigmatization, ensure survivor friendly criminal justice, promote survivor-centered approach more generally and in every aspect of dealing with survivors, set up a viable state-sponsored system for providing holistic rehabilitation services, share good practices and ensure better coordination of different stakeholders through regular consultations. An important part of our mission to safeguard U.S. foreign assistance is the prevention of sexual violence involving USAID beneficiaries. Our investigative work has led to the suspension and debarment of sexual abusers from the aid sector to prevent them from recirculating to other organizations, putting more beneficiaries at risk. This includes the suspension and debarment of WHO officials who had sexually exploited or assaulted women and girls in the Democratic Republic of the Congo while performing USAID-funded Ebola programming.   USAID OIG’s investigations also led to a suspension and debarment in a case of sexual exploitation and abuse by a USAID grantee employee in Southern Africa. International Sexual Violence Day we need to talk about the serious problems faced by Rohingya women and girls in Rakhine State. Like others in conflict zones, they don’t start wars or have the power to stop them. Yet, they suffer the most, especially from sexual violence. In Rakhine State, sexual violence against Rohingya women and girls is very common and terrifying. Rape and sexual assault are used as weapons to scare and control communities. Women and girls who are displaced, refugees, or migrants are in great danger. Despite these terrible conditions, the voices of Rohingya women and girls are not heard in peace, security, and humanitarian decisions. This keeps them away from finding solutions. Also, the services that help survivors of gender-based violence are not enough in conflict areas. On International Sexual Violence Day, we need to speak up for Rohingya women and girls. We should include them in peace processes and provide them with the support they need. Their experiences and needs must be considered to achieve global peace and security. World leaders are aware of sexual violence being conducted by the #SAF and #RSF in #Sudan. World leaders have allowed a complete vacuum in civilian protection #POC to install itself, they can no longer deny they know what will happen as the conflict expands into new areas. The world, including the #UNSC, #AfricanUnion failed Sudanese civilians when they pulled out peacekeeping forces and then the #UN political mission, now they must act to provide protection to civilians still at risk of abuse. Human Rights Watch released a new report today on the horrific acts of rape, gang rape, sexual slavery by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, both in Khartoum and surrounding areas. These acts continue today in other areas of Sudan and are are completely unchecked and perpetrators immune from justice and accountability. This is a CHOICE by the international community who do have the power to protection women and all civilians from sexual violence but choose to not deploy a protection for them. https://lnkd.in/eXTTkdCh

Seeking safety is a human right, and yet, data shows that women around the globe feel unsafe, inside or outside their homes.    A 2021 study, conducted by World Vision found that around 50 percent of surveyed women in Lebanon, Jordan, and Türkiye felt they were not able to enjoy safety and freedom of movement outside home, and the same was true for over 70 percent of surveyed women in Iraq, north-west Syria, or government of Syria ruled areas.   Being in a vulnerable position to need humanitarian aid is exacerbated by the fact that women aid seekers face increased risks of violence -- 73% of women reported being fearful and feeling unsafe during food distribution   During #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, read this article from one of our World Vision experts, who shares lessons learned and a toolkit on preventing sexual abuse and exploitation in an emergency setting: https://lnkd.in/gkijMTrn #16Days #VisionforChange #SecuringFutures #EmpowerWomen #EmpowerGirls #GBV
