Workshop on Transboundary Climate Risk Management for the Zarafshan river basin Today, on October 3 started the second Transboundary Climate Risk Management Workshop in Penjikent, Tajikistan. It is organized within the framework of the regional project "Climate Risk Management in Central Asia", implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH on behalf of the German Government. The first workshop was successfully concluded earlier this year in Uzbekistan (Samarkand). Both events aim to facilitate #cooperation in addressing climate change impacts affecting vital resources and people's habitat. Various stakeholders from different levels can enhance mutual understanding and transboundary cooperation. Representatives from Tajik and Uzbek ministries and other state authorities, NGOs, international organizations come together to analyze climate risks, identify #adaptation measures and prioritize them with a special focus on water resources and sectors depending on them. Over the two days seminar participants will develop climate adaptation measures focused on Zarafshan River Basin- the only waterway that passes through large areas of both countries. It serves as a source of fresh water for millions of people and there are villages completely dependent on this river. The draft action plan will be presented in November for validation by project partners from Central Asian countries. Afterwards it shall be integrated into the local development planning. The next workshop on transboundary climate risk management is planned between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan for the Isfayram-Say and Shakhimardan river basins on 8th of October in Osh, Republic of Kyrgyzstan. #gizcentralasia #climatechange #climateriskmanagement

Director at CERIDES - Excellence in Innovation and Technology, European University Cyprus / Professor in Risk Assessment
An important finding of EU in Emergencies #wildfire peer review of Hellenic Fire Service Official Πυροσβεστικό Σώμα Ελλάδας 🇬🇷 is the following: “Update the wildfire risk and hazard maps, along with an updated wildfire risk assessment and identification of risks for the wildland-urban interface areas”. New advanced fire models, new fire propagation models, new evacuation models, new pyrometeorological models, should be integrated to provide a daily, near real-time 🔥 risk assessment results on small time-step intervals. #ClimateCrisis emerges faster than anticipated and decision making mechanisms need to catch up. It is time for proper integration of fire science to government decision making. Back in 2018 together with Enrico Ronchi and Guillermo Rein we wrote an open letter to the European Commission: “Without knowledge of fire science, safety of citizens cannot be guaranteed”. The reasons are still valid.

Culture and resilience stand out in 2024-25 risk assessment https://lnkd.in/g6bqhMnF At the launch of its 10th annual report, Risk Report 2024-25, the institute warned that South Africa’s national resilience was nearing a catastrophic tipping point, and that the single highest risk facing the country was a disengaged populace. They singled out action, culture, collaboration and resilience as key elements to move the country from complacency to action.

From strength to strength: to mark International Women’s Day, we held a brief conversation with Berta Tenzer-Melman, Chief Risk Officer and member of management at Mekorot National Water Company. Berta, tell us a bit about yourself. I am married and a mother of four. I have been working at Mekorot for 25 years out of patriotism and a true sense of mission. I am responsible for management of company’s strategic, operational, financial, regulatory, and corporate governance risks. I achieved this position after a long career in which I developed and grew, including two university degrees and certification as Chief Risk Officer (CRO) and CPA-ERM certification from Columbia University New York. What is your outlook for a managerial position? I believe that hard work and vision, patience, giving, values, and professionalism are an integral part of work in a managerial position. Good managers, both men and women, are measured by their ability to identify the potential in employees and help them realize it. What are the risks that you deal with at Mekorot? The company is committed to managerial and operational excellence in every water sector. In the face of Israel’s national targets, Mekorot deals with a range of growing risks, which are affected by climate and natural events, cyber attacks, and a long series of other threats. How does Mekorot deal with climate and natural risks? Obviously, Mekorot cannot prevent a climate and natural event, such as what happened a year ago, following the earthquake in the Mediterranean basin and "Barbara" Storm hitting Israel. Mekorot must therefore have full readiness at all times ensure its purpose: the continuous and reliable supply of high-quality water for all needs and every point in the country. What is the status of Mekorot’s emergency readiness? Mekorot is ready for the most complex situations thanks to its forward-looking scenario management and maintaining operational continuity even when a risk materializes. If I return the example mentioned earlier about last year’s extreme events, Mekorot’s full readiness meant that there was no water shortage even for a moment. Can you give an example of maintaining water redundancy in an emergency? The Reverse Water Carrier project. This is a unique project by every measure, to carry surplus desalinated water from central Israel northward to the Kinneret. Strengthening the national natural reservoir makes it possible to protect it as a strategic-operational asset for the water industry, including the ability to store water for an emergency. In conclusion, what is your message to women? A woman is powerful and special with her amazing capabilities. I strongly believe that it is precisely the challenges that enable you to grow and realize yourself in life. Believe in yourselves!
