An estimated 1.75 million people are at potential risk. New EU humanitarian funding will support Rwanda in addressing this health emergency through: 😷 Strengthening coordination and surveillance 👩⚕️ Managing new cases and training healthcare workers 💊 Providing essential medical supplies The project, to be implemented by the World Health Organization and ALIMA, is set to run for six months. If implemented, the two laws adopted today by the Knesset of Israel would likely prevent UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as mandated by the UN General Assembly, with devastating consequences for Palestine refugees. I call on Israel to act consistently with its obligations under the Charter of the United Nations and its other obligations under international law, including under international humanitarian law and those concerning privileges and immunities of the United Nations. National legislation cannot alter those obligations. I am bringing this matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly, and will keep the Assembly closely informed as the situation develops. There is no alternative to UNRWA.

"They have destroyed our hearts, our lives, our very essence." Yasser, Khadra, Tareq, and many other Palestinians in the West Bank have endured Israeli settler violence for years. Recently, however, the situation has gotten worse. Thanks to EU humanitarian funding, UNRWA records these violations of international humanitarian law and supports victims of demolitions. © European Union, 2024.

When it comes to health emergency preparedness and response, what is the interplay between climate change and infectious diseases? What role is the EU playing in the current Mpox crisis? Together, we are better prepared. Today, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič joined Germany's Baden-Württemberg Minister of the Interior, Thomas Strobl, at a full-scale EU Civil Protection exercise in Germany. The drill tested the participants' ability to respond to a simulated 6.9-magnitude earthquake. Teams from Germany, Austria, Greece, France, and Switzerland practiced urban search and rescue, chemical accident response, and securing drinking water supplies. Such exercises are vital for strengthening European disaster response capacities and ensuring coordinated teamwork during real emergencies, both within Europe and beyond. Disaster preparedness saves lives. That's why the EU invests in professional training for first responders and civil protection practitioners.   Last week, we joined one such exercise in Venice, Italy, where teams from across Europe - Austria, Czechia, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Spain - trained together to be better prepared when a real disaster strikes.   The exercise scenario?   Heavy rain and strong winds impacting the Venetian lagoon, leading to widespread flooding, destroyed buildings, and people missing or in urgent need of medical attention. European teams being deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to test their cooperation in an emergency setting.   The main skills practiced?   Emergency medical care, urban search and rescue, building temporary shelters, protecting cultural heritage, and strengthening teamwork across languages and organisational boundaries - all with the support of EU Civil Protection liaison officers.   This exercise wouldn't have been possible without the extraordinary help of all the volunteers, organisers, and local civil protection teams. Thank you for the great teamwork! 👏   #EUCivilProtection #PreparednessSavesLives

"The people of Sudan are experiencing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. 25 million people, half of Sudan's population, are in urgent need of assistance." On Friday, the United Kingdom, along with 10 other humanitarian aid donors, including the EU, issued a joint statement on humanitarian access in Sudan, calling on the warring parties to stop blocking aid from reaching those in need. "The parties have a duty to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and humanitarian personnel."
