Lots of hoopla around GE and Boeing right now. Loads of people saying I have the answer to all and it is Lean. Let me remind you of the basics of a manufacturing company serving the public - Priorities in descending order 1) Safety first of employees, then of the end customer. If there are intermittent customers, they cannot harm the end customer. 2) Maintenance and set-up at all stages of the supply chain. 3) Quality of supplied materials. 4) Quality of the assembled product. 5) Flow of the entire value stream, including maintenance provisions. 6) Failure analysis and feedback loops with robust corrective actions. After that, let the free for all start. Any label will do if the above is in place. Feel free to pick it apart or add to it. Safety at all stages is non negotiable.

The time for luck must come to an end to ensure safety. As well as safety the cost of error is too high. Getting it wrong costs everybody and the country. Approx 20% of budgets go towards doing things twice instead of doing things right the first time. We can’t allow ourselves to take 20-25 years to get quality and quality culture right.
