Great article on the Airbus-led MFFD project! Launched in 2014 under Clean Aviation Clean Sky 2’s Large Passenger Aircraft platform, the Multifunctional Fuselage Demonstrator (MFFD) measures eight meters long and four meters wide. The fuselage is made largely from thermoplastic composites. The MFFD’s innovations are a wholly European success story. Airbus is one of 13 major partners in the consortium, including Saab, GKN Aerospace GKN Fokker, the German aerospace lab German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Delft University of Technology SAM XL, and a network of subcontractors. The MFFD has recently been awarded the prestigious JEC Group Innovation Award, highlighting its groundbreaking contributions to the aerospace industry.

“We welcome the news that the Government has launched the consultation on the Gas Shipper Obligation, an important step to help build infrastructure and capacity of hydrogen supply in the UK and support R&D and testing of hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen will play an essential role in decarbonising aviation, bringing significant benefits to people around the world as well as to the UK economy.” – Russ Dunn, Chief Technology Officer, GKN Aerospace and Chair of Hydrogen in Aviation. Since we were formed in 2023, HIA has called for swift investment in hydrogen production and infrastructure. This is especially important for sectors with hard to abate emissions, like aviation. This action will support near term supply of hydrogen for aerospace R&D, whilst also creating capacity and experience in producing, transporting and handling hydrogen to support the longer term ramp up of hydrogen in aviation.
