An earlier post explains how a 10°C increase in temperature can increase the reaction rate constant by 1.5 to 2 times, depending on the activation energy of the specific chemistry. (https://lnkd.in/dHn6UKCv) The reaction time—batch time for a batch reactor or residence time for a flow reactor—is inversely proportional to the average reaction rate. Thus, any increase in the reaction rate leads to a proportional decrease in residence time. This rule of thumb helps predict expected residence time when performing chemistry at a higher temperature than the existing batch recipe. It applies to both batch and continuous processes. However, for exothermic reactions in batch reactors, the limited heat transfer coefficient can restrict the maximum temperature due to safety and operational concerns. For a given batch temperature and known residence time, one can predict the expected residence time, assuming a 10°C increase doubles the reaction rate. The attached slide shows an example of the impact of temperature on residence time, based on batch data of temperature and batch time.
