Today we begin a content series called “25 Days of Project 2025”. If you weren’t already concerned about a second Trump presidency then brace yourself because this sh*t is scary. Project 2025, devised by former Trump White House staffers, is an authoritarian, Christian nationalist plan to transform the Untied States into an autocracy. It would undermine the rule of law, the separation of powers, the separation of church and state and civil liberties for women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. Each day we’ll be highlighting a different policy contained in Project 2025’s 900-page manifesto. The Iowa House has scheduled a hearing on the LGBTQ Erasure Act, HSB 649, a bill that would create problems for same-sex parents, jeopardize federal domestic violence prevention funds, and force transgender Iowans to out themselves on their driver's licenses. The bill even enshrines the legally and morally discredited phrase "separate but equal" into Iowa law. To counter this legislative threat, we need your support. Year after year, the Supreme Court’s relentless power grab costs us our lives, freedoms and democracy. We’re done paying the price. As the justices hand down their final decisions, it’s time to take power back from the Court so that it works for US! We deserve better than a doggedly partisan Court that trades in our lives, our freedoms, and our democracy in order to help the ultra rich and powerful get richer and more powerful. And better is possible if only our members of Congress are bold enough to act — and we are bold enough to demand they do. LGBTQ+ rights, among so many other rights, are under attack in states across the country. The Supreme Court will hear cases next term that impact these rights. Katherine Krimmel's Divergent Democracy is an innovative examination of the shift by American political parties toward issue-based differentiation. Recent Democratic and Republican party platforms display clear differences on such issues as abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, gun control, and the environment. These distinctions reflect a programmatic party system—that is, one in which policy positions serve as a key basis of electoral competition. Yet party politics were not always so issue-oriented; the rise of policy positions as the dominant marker of party appeal occurred largely over the last fifty years. In Divergent Democracy, Katherine Krimmel examines this transformation of the American party system, using innovative machine learning techniques to develop and present the first measure of party differentiation on issues since Democrats and Republicans began competing with each other in 1856. Using both quantitative and qualitative tools, Krimmel offers a vital view of the foundations of today’s issue-based party competition and its alternatives. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, symbolizes the liberation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is a celebration of resilience, freedom, and a reminder of the continuous struggle for equality and justice. As we honor this day, it's crucial to recognize and celebrate the intersection of Black and LGBTQ+ communities. Both continue to face systemic oppression, discrimination, and violence. The liberation of one group cannot be fully realized without the liberation of all. The struggles at the intersection of racism, homophobia, and transphobia highlight the importance of understanding how various forms of discrimination overlap and impact people's lives. It never did and it never will.” - Frederick Douglass Reflecting on LGBTQ+ Pride and Juneteenth celebrations during June offers a chance to consider the progress and persistent challenges Black and Queer communities have faced over the decades. Juneteenth, recognized as a federal holiday on June 19, 2021, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans were freed, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This recognition came amidst a global shutdown, 13 months after George Floyd's murder sparked powerful protests against racial injustice, and six months after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Similarly, Pride Month, celebrated in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, highlights the progress of the LGBTQ+ community, including the 2015 Supreme Court ruling making same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional. However, in 2023, over 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in state legislatures across the country, reflecting ongoing resistance to equality. Recently, Republicans have proposed Project 2025. Despite federal protections for queer folk, Black Americans, people of color, and women, we see these protections being gradually eroded by local legislation. This is why active participation in our communities is crucial. It helps us understand local issues and learn how to support our neighbors and ourselves. Engage in activities and spaces where you feel comfortable, socialize, and learn about yourself and others. This way, we become aware of important issues and learn to advocate for our communities. The political landscape can be overwhelming, but change starts with one conversation. Engage in meaningful dialogue about race, sexuality, and identity. Educate yourself and others about ongoing struggles. And when you're ready, register to vote and empower yourself to contribute to systemic change. Our collective actions can ensure that the progress we've made is not only celebrated, but preserved, and expanded.
