A logger, conservationist, politician, miller, government land manager, outdoor educator, forester and a politician walk into the forest. What do you get? stumped? A diverse stand? Maybe both! W/ the #DarringtonCollaborative we were impressed by the treatment areas on Segelson by Hampton Lumber and Sierra Pacific Industries with logging done by 3 RIVERS CUTTING, INC. There was more light on the forest floor increasing flora and fauna diversity while also sending timber to local mills. The Wilderness Society , Washington Wild, American Whitewater Thanks for joining us Herrera Environmental Consultants, National Forest Foundation, Representative Kim Schrier, Representative Rick Larsen, USDA Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources #Firthekids #collaborativeforestry We are currently hiring for entry-level positions that have worked on this project in the past for both youth and adults!

Today's feature for "STEM Women" is Alison Rogerson, Environmental Scientist for our Division of Watershed Stewardship. As an environmental scientist focused on wetlands, Alison's work involves seasonal and yearly changes. She tracks Delaware's wetlands, assesses their health, identifies threats, and enhances public understanding. Fieldwork, often in the summer, involves muddy tasks. She analyzes collected data, creates reports, maps, and engages in education, reaching thousands of kids and landowners to promote wetland awareness. Why did you choose your field? "While searching for college majors I discovered wildlife management, which I studied for my bachelor’s degree, with a minor in Water Resources Management because I was already interested in wetlands. I love being part of the solution and going to bed knowing that I’m helping the environment and the people who benefit from the natural services it offers (like clean water, a peaceful place to kayak or healthy fish to catch)." Biggest piece of advice: "I would say don’t stress about figuring out exactly what you want to do. There are so many options out there and you shouldn’t feel pressured to know what suits you best right away. It’s ok to try things out and decide to go a slightly different direction." https://lnkd.in/eNk_X7gy

Biodiversity Action Plans for farms. Natural Capital surveyor. Weed and Pests monitoring and management. Citizen science educator. Awe hunter. Inventor #PopUpPuddle #BandicootMotel #RabbitMagnet #DunnartDen.
I can research reserves remotely, but I don't know what I don't know till I ask the farmer beside that place. In October I start a four month remote camera survey series of two Parks Victoria salt lake assets just east of the town of Mortlake in SW Victoria. They're called N16 and N17. (I truly think that needs an improvement). They have no official records for fauna apart from birds. My mission is to improve the data, so Parks Victoria have better knowledge of what inhabits these reserves. It's also an opportunity for me to build that public knowledge so that others in the area, like Mortlake College, can use that verified data to build any future environmental education programs they might want to. And gain funding for them based on proven fauna records. Last but not at all least, for the farmers here. The crown to farm boundary is right on the edge of the lakes in most of their circumference. So the salt marsh to water to pasture interface is very narrow. I have been visiting and scoping the possible locations for the survey sites on the crown land over the last few months and each time if I see the adjoining landholders or their staff in the paddocks, I've waved. Then on Sunday I met one of them on the roadside. A dairy farmer. Third generation there. My hand disappeared into his and that electric current that kicks like a hot wire up your arm came on. Its called 'magic about to happen' and is completely different from 'make it quick'. Long story short, we talked. I gave him my card, said why I'm visiting and what I will be doing and why. Because I understand that wondering that comes when a ute starts turning up on your farm roadside with a person with a camera. So I was keen to allay any concerns he might have had and identify my purpose in person. He must've liked the cut of my kiwi-isms because after we had discussed parrots and feral cat trapping he decided to help me. It's a very generous thing to not only talk about history of a place next to a crown reserve, but also to grant access to paddocks, a cuppa, and a toilet. In return I will do whatever I can to ensure this farmer and his neighbors and their families see what I see. To enjoy the knowledge. But also so that when the Federal Government Nature Repair Market metrics are released and farmers can start applying for certificates, they can chose whether to use what I have learnt to evidence what biodiversity their land supports in conjunction with the adjoining salt lake reserves. There's great things to be learnt about how biodiversity use farmed land. What farmers need is industry direction and support to help them uncover that data. Have you heard? The #impact of field stations goes far beyond just the facilitation of #research, says a new study published in Conservation Letters. The study, which surveyed 157 field stations across 56 countries shows that the presence and funding of field stations results in healthier surrounding #ecosystems, less #wildlife crime, and increased #community benefits 🌍 Read the full article on Mongabay at the link below ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gR7cwB9N
