The GAA is displaying a commendable example of prioritising responsible alcohol consumption over financial gain, especially in the context of their stance on alcohol consumption at sporting events. Unlike the scenarios where American football and Bruce Springsteen concerts at Croke Park allow fans to enjoy alcoholic beverages from their seats, the GAA's approach warrants attention for its forward-thinking stance on public health and safety when it comes to Irish sport. This discrepancy isn't merely about creating a double standard but underscores a deeper commitment to encouraging more responsible alcohol consumption among fans, irrespective of the event when it comes to Irish sport. What rockers or other foreign sports do is not relevant to it. Thems their rules. In not extending the permission to consume alcohol directly in the seating areas to all events, the GAA indirectly supports efforts made elsewhere, like the rugby Principality Stadium in Wales and Twickenham, to offer a more inclusive and comfortable environment for all attendees. It reflects government health policy. Irish rugby choses to ignore this The GAA's stance reflects its values. Rugby had a choice whether to accept these values and are lucky to be allowed to play at Croke Park at all

Championship Teams - Boston Celtics The storied Boston Celtics won their 18th title this week. How do some teams seem to do better than others? They know how to win, expect to win, and have the desire to prepare to win. The Celtics had a good team committed to the purpose, goals, and continuous improvement toward their own true potential You always hear championship teams talk about “team chemistry”. This is key and comes back to belief, commitment, and trust. They all believed and committed to do their part.  They depended on each other, held each other accountable, and when challenges arose, (a key player injury) they always had the “next man up” attitude with zero fear. Do you have a championship team? Do you and your team believe in and have a clear picture of what true potential looks like?  Have you 100% committed to it? Do you trust everyone on the team? There are only a few things in your business that produce the most results. Do you and your team know what they are and are you focused on spending most of your time there? The Celtics had a bold goal, built the right team, committed to their belief, and trusted they would get there. Oh yes, and they had a good ole Indiana boy who assembled the Celtics 18th championship team.  Brad Stevens, Celtics President is a former coach who focuses on a few simple fundamentals and concepts. His deals were instrumental in putting the pieces in place to get there. His competitive coaching and management style mimics a former Celtics star, and also an Indiana native, who also helped the Celtics win 3 of their championships – Larry Bird. Coordination of the game calendar like this is going to be essential in bringing the finances of the game into better shape. The different set-ups of the various stakeholders make it challenging, but the commercial logic (no, necessity!) is compelling. I suspect the bigger challenge is yet to be solved, and that's how to pool commercial rights in such a way as to spread the value of rugby's iconic events - Six Nations Rugby, The British & Irish Lions etc. - across the professional club game. That's where the value is.

EQUITY is a very important value in my life (more than EQUALITY, but that’s another post for another day). At last night’s Denver Barbarians Rugby Club training, we had a scrimmage against our “sister” rugby club, Colorado Gray Wolves. I used to coach a women's team back in New York, and many of my current players have played in co-ed touch rugby teams, but this was the first time any of us had played in a men vs women game. Specific aspects were adapted and controlled to maintain safety and security, but otherwise it was a regular scrimmage. In our sport, soft skills such as rugby IQ, spatial awareness, and communication are no less important than hard “skills” such as strength, physicality, and aggression, and under last night’s controlled conditions, the soft skills in my players were thoroughly tested. The result was a highly competitive, highly skillful, and highly equitable game of rugby where both teams adapted, learned, and had fun, three key tenets of my coaching (and leadership) philosophy. Moral of the story: “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. This is true in sport and in business, and to achieve equity we must recognize these inequalities, make adjustments, and adapt.
