Something to consider? Steel? Electricity? Nearly 1/2 million jobs? Time to start working with all the options to service our needs perhaps? Sometimes lost in the debate around coal is the constant demand for steel to make 'renewable' energy possible. Wind turbines, solar panels, hydro-electricity cannot exist without coking coal to make steel. If we stop coal mining, we forego renewables. I think we are smarter than this. Let's look at the complete picture Australia, not just the vision of some parties with a vested interest in one subset.

The 2024 -2025 budget has outlined resource sector priorities that put tax breaks to incentivise critical minerals mining at the top. What is missing is increasing resources for regulators to regulate (not just approve mines), funding to support community engagement or to build stronger conditions for environmental protection, benefit sharing and partnerships, and First Nations rights and heritage protection. This is a business as usual budget - with a tinge of green (and what ever colour is reserved for defence... grey?)

Anil Swarupji, former Coal Secretary, defined a bureaucrat’s work, in words that make a corporate equivalent look easy. He defined decisions having to meet the following criteria:- 1. Politically acceptable 2. Socially desirable 3. Technologically feasible 4. Financially viable 5. Administratively doable 6. Judicially tenable 7. Environmentally sustainable 8. 📝 The Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) has now been published and will come into effect on 23 May 2024. It establishes a comprehensive framework to ensure a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials. ♻️ The CRMA identifies two essential lists of materials: 34 critical materials and 17 strategic materials that play a crucial role in green and digital transitions. To ensure sustainable consumption, the regulation establishes three benchmarks for the EU's annual raw material consumption. This includes sourcing 10% from local extraction, processing 40% within the EU, and obtaining 25% from recycled materials.
