Cars, Careers, Commerce, and Community A lot of business owners and leaders love their cars, and here is an opportunity to get together and enjoy some great Virginia October weather while showing them off for a good cause. It's no secret to any followers of my feed how much interest I have in the Academies of Loudoun. This is one of the country's premier high schools that offers such a wide range of technical and scientific possibilities that nearly any kid who is determined to find a path can have access. Though it is not exclusive or elite, the opportunities they offer certainly are. So many fields provide a launch pad to propel their career forward, and businesses routinely scout the school for future talent. My own daughter earned welding certifications here and had a fantastic job waiting for her before she even graduated. My son earned his CNA in their nursing program before graduation, and his early experience in their Engineering program has him on a path toward biomedical engineering now. ❓ How does what we do on a weekend have anything to do with what we go back to on Mondays? So many things - - It ties us and our business back to #communityWellness. - It builds a muscle memory of engagement with others as we keep our head up looking for opportunities and purpose. - We find ways to highlight shared experiences among those in our organizations. - They give us networking opportunities to meet new people and get more comfortable talking about what we do and why we do it. Today, The AJC launched a new marketing campaign that will help us tell our story to the people of Atlanta, Georgia and the South. At heart, the campaign is a promise to our city and our community that we are here, everyday, for The Greater Atlanta.  https://lnkd.in/eKHE2kmq Each month, I write a letter to our subscribers, outlining our plans and our progress to bring them along with us on our journey to transform The AJC from a storied 155 year-old daily newspaper into a modern media company. https://lnkd.in/efNDvHaZ Our efforts come at a particularly challenging time for our industry. There has been a great deal written over the last couple of weeks about the struggles of legacy news organizations, projecting doom, gloom, and a long, slow march to irrelevance. This isn't new. When I graduated from college in 1996, I was told by prospective employers that newsrooms were shrinking, business models were failing, and jobs were scant.   At the time, the Internet was in its infancy, there was no such thing as a smartphone, and the closest thing to a social media platform was an AOL chatroom. Much of the country still got their news first from Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw or Dan Rather at 6:30 each night and from a daily paper in their driveway each morning.   The steady erosion of the industry since that time reflects shifting consumer behaviors, rapid technological advancement, and a failure to innovate; all harbingers of industries on the brink of existential disruption. It is fair for the news industry to place some blame on the greed of technology platforms and the apathy of consumers, but we must also look at ourselves.   The question now is, what to do about it? We at The AJC certainly don’t have all the answers. But we do believe in the power of quality journalism and the critical role it plays in free and democratic societies.  We believe we have a responsibility to the community we serve and that the onus is on us to prove that we can play both an essential and engaging role in people's lives. We believe that investing in world class journalism as well as world class product experiences that serve the needs of our audiences can lay the foundation for a sustainable and growing business. We are fortunate to live, work and play in one of the most dynamic cities in America, and our strategy is informed by a conviction that if we provide value in the lives of the people of Atlanta, Georgia and the South, that the best days of The AJC lie ahead.
