Navigate focuses on Early Childhood Education, Transition (ECE, elementary, middle and high school) Programs, and making sure residents understand their educational options in the city of St. Louis. Kindergarten and the skills learned at this grade level are critical to a student’s educational journey. And currently, kindergarten isn’t a requirement in the state of MO. In addition to this, being prepared for the transition to kindergarten starts earlier than most caregivers anticipate, putting them behind in the enrollment process - leaving them with less school options, and less time to access any additional resources they may need to get their student to [and through] school. We are celebrating Family Day in support of American Education Week!   Family and guardians taking active roles in their child’s education on a daily basis can be crucial for optimal success at school. Schools can ensure parents and caregivers are equipped with the information they need by establishing successful communication systems. Here are a few suggestions:   -Consider resource learning sessions that take place where families and caregivers congregate. -Meet at libraries, grocery stores, churches, or community centers. -Account for translation needs in diverse communities. -Offer community-centered restorative practices and events for families, community leaders, and school representatives. For example, set up an event with a dialogue facilitator on becoming comfortable having uncomfortable conversations.   What are some ways you have found communicating with families and guardians that has led to student success? #AEW2023

As the school year wraps up, I want to highlight the importance of appreciating our children's teachers. While school fees cover many aspects of education, the value of a simple "thank you" is immeasurable. During the recent Parent-Teacher Conferences, many kind words lifted my spirits. However, some comments were less encouraging. Teachers pour their hearts into their work, often going above and beyond for their students. Acknowledgment, even through a few kind words, can make a significant difference. Appreciation doesn’t have to be about gifts; it can be as simple as a heartfelt note or a few words recognizing a teacher’s hard work and positive influence. These gestures uplift teachers and create a positive school community. Let’s come together to show gratitude to the teachers who have been integral to our children’s growth this year. Promising ECE approach being implemented in Louisville, Kentucky. Quote from article below: Thrive by 5, separate from the Louisville government, will work in these phases, Greenberg announced: Phase 1: During the first one to two years, which will “begin immediately,” Thrive by 5 will be staffed. It will then establish “pilot participation” with preschools, child care centers and family child care homes. During this phase, the nonprofit will also create an online resource hub for parents, which they can use to learn about eligibility. It will focus, Greenberg said, on getting “early learning professionals hired, trained, supported and compensated at a level that allows them to do the incredibly important work that we know we need them to do.”  Phase 2: During the third and fourth years, which should begin in about a year, Thrive by 5 will launch financial assistance for families who earn less than 300% of the federal poverty lLevel (FPL) so their 4-year-olds can attend preschool. This eligibility marker comes out to $93,600 for a family of four. “Using that threshold, there will be thousands of hard working families across our city in every metro council district who will have a much easier time accessing high quality preschool for their children,” Greenberg said. Phase 3: During the fifth years and beyond, Thrive by 5 will expand financial assistance eligibility “to more Louisville children.” 

"When my daughter was ready for school, I was determined to find a nurturing experience for her. I searched for a school where she would be affirmed and loved for all of who she is. But that school didn’t exist. I toured many different programs and was mortified by what I saw in early childhood education. The entire system is rooted in misogyny and exploitation. The workforce, 97% women, made an average of $14/hour in extremely challenging teaching roles. The conditions made it near impossible to embrace equity. ❓️What would an early childhood program rooted in embracing equity look like? ❓️How would it be built? ❓️How would it function? ❓️What infrastructure is required to integrate a DEI strategy from the inside out? My good friend Esther, an Indigenous Montessori teacher from Zuni, and I started dreaming our wildest hopes into a plan. The plan started to take shape and we decided to start a tiny, one room classroom in rural Texas. Esther and I both relocated to the area, pulled all-nighters doing renovations, writing lesson plans, and building out the pilot program. But at the end of the day, we learned that it takes more than two dedicated teachers. A school must be the heartbeat of a community. Without systemic support, an individual school cannot thrive. Through blood, sweat, and a lot of tears, we deteriorated our mental and physical health. We were both diagnosed with severe depression and for 3 months I thought I had cancer. Although the school was only open for 8 months, it was a life-changing and extremely valuable learning experience (I’ll share more soon). I’m not fully recovered yet but I am proud that we preserved our friendship and, in the end, we chose our wholeness and well being. That choice represents so much healing. It represents no longer being governed by self-sacrificing reactions. It means that as educators and as women of color we get to be affirmed in our full humanity, too." On the 70th Anniversary of Brown, it is noteworthy how much of the Black-White gap remains in NAEP scores. Preschool could further reduce the gap--if we would just do it right and ensure the kids get it. NJ's program comes closest to replicating highly successful models at scale and estimates of effects at 4th and 8th grade for 2 years of preschool would close 40-50 percent of the score gaps. Yet, far too few children--even in NJ cities where it is an entitlement--attend for two years. That must change. https://lnkd.in/eMKKugvF
