When the supplement to the 2022 California Green Building Standards Code - Part 11 of Title 24, California Code of Regulations goes into effect this weekend, California will become the first state to adopt embodied carbon provisions into their building code. If you don’t believe in collaboration, then don’t start a construction project. There are five principles critical to a construction project. I called these the SPECS principles. These stand for: 🔴Simplicity 🟡Precision 🟢Efficiency 🟠Collaboration 🔵Sustainability ✅Without a commitment to these principles from both you and your design team, your project will fail to meet your expectations. It might even go off the rails at some point during the design and construction process. ✅Our fourth principle, collaboration, involves building a great team including you, your staff, engineers and designers who will work together to overcome the challenges you may face. ✅Collaboration and building partnerships with quality consultants and suppliers is essential for masterplan projects and complex buildings that require a lot of ‘joined up’ thinking involving infrastructure, transport, building design, landscape, hydrology, bio-diversity and energy generation. ✅Your architect is like the conductor of the orchestra who does not need to play every instrument but does need to know the qualities of each one and how to combine them to create a compelling performance. Collaboration requires radical empathy, active listening, engagement with subject matter experts, and being open to different points of view. ✅Your architect will lead the team during the pre-contract phases of the project and translate your vision into a physical vision for the building and landscape.
