Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including trachoma, the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness, thrive in areas with limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). WASH interventions are essential across the full spectrum of prevention, treatment, management, and care for NTDs. However, it is estimated that 785 million people lack access to basic water services, over two billion people do not have access to basic sanitation, and three billion lack hand and face washing facilities at home. This #WorldWaterDay, we highlight experiences from Ethiopia, Nigeria and Uganda to improve cross-sectoral collaboration to achieve global targets for clean water and sanitation and #beatNTDs. World Water Day is an annual event observed on March 22 to recognize the importance of water and create awareness about the global water crisis. The day is dedicated to highlighting the fact that 2.2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water. Water is essential to every aspect of life, it helps reduce poverty, prevent diseases, and drive economic growth. This life-saving resource deserves recognition and protection. Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services is vital to maintaining the health and well-being of people worldwide. Poor water quality, inadequate sanitation coverage, and lack of access to drinking water can increase the risk of spreading waterborne diseases like cholera. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Ending Cholera. https://lnkd.in/gFB7Bpqx

What is WASH, and why is it crucial in the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)? WASH, which stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, is a fundamental tool in preventing diseases like trachoma and intestinal worms. These diseases are most common in areas with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation, where transmission thrives. By promoting hygiene practices and ensuring access to clean water, WASH serves as a cornerstone in stopping the spread of NTDs before they cause irreversible harm. In areas like Kajiado, the integration of WASH education into trachoma elimination programs has been instrumental in reducing infection rates in local schools, proving that education and infrastructure improvements can have immediate, life-changing effects. At GANE, we are working to expand the impact of WASH initiatives across Kenya. Our goal is to: 🚰 Advocate for better WASH infrastructure in schools and communities 👩🏫 Drive education programs to raise awareness about hygiene and disease prevention. 🤝 Collaborate with partners to ensure sustainable access to clean water and proper sanitation for all. Through these efforts, we aim to create long-term, sustainable solutions to prevent NTDs and protect vulnerable populations. We believe that with the right interventions, we can #EndTheNeglect on NTDs not just in Kenya, but Africa and the world at large 🌍 #GANE #EndTheNeglect #NTDs #WASH #SustainableHealth #CommunityHealth

The Cholera situation in Zambia has been a concern in recent years. Cholera is a waterborne disease, and in Zambia, outbreaks often occur during the rainy season due to poor sanitation and lack of access to clean water. The Zambian government and international organizations inclusive of FHI 360 have been working to improve water and sanitation infrustructures, as well as promote awareness about hygiene, handwashing, safe sanitation and access to clean water in our communities to prevent the spread of cholera. Let us unite to kick out cholera and remember to practice the 3Cs (Clean water, clean hands and early care). #Choleraprevention #hygienematters #cleanwaterforall Ministry of Health of Zambia Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI)

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect over 1 billion of the most marginalised populations in the world across 149 countries. Main sources of NTDs are: ••Low-quality housing ••Inadequate water ••Poor sanitation and health services ••Political instability However clean and safe water, sanitation, preventive chemotherapy, vector control and hygiene are critical for control of and elimination of NTDs such as schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases. credit: @RuhumurizaJustin #BeatNTDs #StayHealthy #waterislife World Health Organization Water.org African Union
