As a humanitarian practitioner, I echo the importance of proactive networking and strategic engagement in competitive recruitment processes, especially within organizations like the UN. Your advice on getting involved, building connections, and presenting clear goals resonates deeply with my own experiences. Engaging in various activities, volunteering, and leveraging platforms like LinkedIn are crucial for visibility and credibility. Articulating aspirations and passion for humanitarian work is key in leaving a lasting impression. In conclusion; your insights provide invaluable guidance for aspiring professionals navigating the recruitment landscape in the humanitarian sector👏
How can I stand out in recruitment processes? Well, if I knew the full answer, I would be rich (or maybe in HR 😄). But I might have some ideas, based on things that have worked for me. So maybe I could share, hoping it can help some of you here looking to break through. After I shared my experience with the UNV programme, many people approached me asking questions about how to "get in". How to stand out and finally be chosen, considering the highly competitive processes for the UN and other humanitarian actors, and the maaaany unsuccessful applications. Here are three tips that I think helped me finally "make it". 🏃♀️Get involved: When I arrived in Brasilia, I was a fresh graduate from law school with no previous links and connections. I devoted all my free time to attending embassy functions, participating in university activities, and volunteering whenever possible. (The photo below was from the day I volunteered with UNDP for an SDG event, and the same day went to a GIZ event on water. Ikid you not, I really was everywhere...) 🤝Get known: Coming from the Brazilian countryside, I didn't know anyone. So I really had to get out of my shell and look for opportunities to engage and know people. Making connections with people who had the internships I wanted, who worked where I wanted to work, who did what I wanted to do... helped me better position myself and even reshape my applications. 🌟Get seen (for the right reasons): Make sure when you meet these new people that you have a clear goal, and that you aptly present it. People have their own agendas, so try to be clear and direct. Meaningfully engage. While I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all strategy, my approach was always to invest in visibility and building my network. This was mostly offline, but LinkedIn can really be a powerful tool to boost your processes and finally break through. For my connections already working in the system, what other tips can you share to help newcomers "breakthrough"? Please share in the comments so we can get the conversations started and maybe help more people to thrive. #HumanitariansAtWork #Recruitment

Dear LinkedIn network, I am reaching out to support some of my international fellow students who have been navigating the job market since our graduation last year. According to Nuffic's 2022 report, 46% of international students choose to remain in the Netherlands in their first year post-graduation, which means that there is a valuable pool of talent for companies and research institutions to consider in their diversity initiatives. However, the stay rate drops to 24% after five years, making me wonder what factors may be involved (apart from the weather): Are there insufficient job opportunities, or is there a lack of effective implementation of diversity policies? What do you think? When a company hires an international employee, they give space for approaching challenges from different perspectives. They get an extreme resilient employee on board! Often, rejection letters cite language proficiency as a reason, leaving me to question how diversity policies are truly being put into practice. Luckily I've always received support from my managers in integrating into the Dutch society. Language barriers should not be a reason to not offer a job position. As a consequence, what I see is: Highly skilled fellow students of mine (I genuinely mean it!) struggling and getting exhausted of a competitive job market. According to Nuffic's report, international graduates positively impact Dutch public finances. So, isn't it about time to give diversity within organizations a real chance? If you have any research/academic vacancy based in the Netherlands, please feel free to reach out to me, and I'll gladly pass the information to them. #diversity #researchvacancy #PhD #ResearchAssistant

Top Three Misconceptions Among International Students, Graduates, and Skilled Migrants (you must know): 1. "PR means no more challenges." PR is just the beginning—navigating the job market, life’s demands, and cultural adjustments still lie ahead. 2. "Owning a house and car means wealth." Possessions don’t guarantee financial security; smart planning and continuous growth do. 3. "Learning ends with graduation." Real learning begins after graduation, through upskilling and adapting to new opportunities. What else can you think of ? #internationalstudents #graduates #careers #skilledmigrants

💡 Are We Doing Enough to Keep the Brightest Minds in Germany? Attracting and retaining international talent is crucial for any economy in an increasingly globalized world. Germany is excelling in attracting international students, especially in the STEM fields, and keeping them here after their studies. 🔍 Did you know? A recent study by Fintiba GmbH and Stifterverband reveals that Germany has one of the highest retention rates of international students among OECD countries. After 5 years, 63% of students who started their studies in 2015 are still in Germany. Even more impressively, after 10 years, 45% of those who began in 2010 remain, contributing to the economy and society. In contrast, countries like the UK and the Netherlands see much lower retention rates, with only around 23% of students staying after 5 years. Why is this important? Retaining international talent is key to addressing skill shortages, particularly in the technology and engineering sectors. Germany’s success in this area not only strengthens our economy but also enriches our cultural diversity and innovation potential. 📈 What can we do to improve even further? Strengthen Integration Support: Providing more robust language learning opportunities and cultural integration programs can help international students feel more at home. Streamline Bureaucracy: Simplifying visa processes and employment pathways for graduates will make it easier for them to transition into the workforce. Enhance Career Services: Universities and companies should collaborate to offer internships, mentorships, and networking events tailored to international students. The potential is enormous, and with the right strategies, we can make Germany an even more attractive destination for global talent. 👉 What are your thoughts on retaining international talent? How can we do better?

Bridging Borders: The Vital Role of Student Recruiters in International Relations In an increasingly interconnected world, fostering strong relationships between nations is essential for promoting mutual understanding, cooperation, and prosperity. One often overlooked but crucial aspect of international relations is the role of student recruiters in facilitating educational exchange programs and building bridges between cultures. Here, we explore the significance of student recruiters in strengthening international relationships and advancing global diplomacy. Cultural Exchange and Understanding: Student recruiters play a pivotal role in promoting cultural exchange and understanding by connecting students from diverse backgrounds with educational opportunities abroad. Through study abroad programs, international students gain firsthand experience of different cultures, languages, and perspectives, fostering empathy, tolerance, and cross-cultural communication skills. Diplomacy Through Education: Education has long been recognized as a powerful tool for diplomacy, enabling nations to build trust, goodwill, and lasting partnerships. Student recruiters serve as ambassadors for their institutions and countries, promoting educational opportunities and fostering positive relationships with international partners. By facilitating academic exchanges and joint research initiatives, they contribute to the soft power of their respective nations and promote a positive image on the global stage. Building Networks and Partnerships: Student recruiters play a vital role in building networks and partnerships between educational institutions, governments, and industry stakeholders. By forging collaborations in areas such as research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, they contribute to knowledge sharing, capacity building, and economic development across borders. These partnerships not only benefit individual students but also strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties between nations. Empowering Global Citizens: By encouraging students to pursue international education opportunities, student recruiters empower the next generation of global citizens with the skills, knowledge, and networks to address shared challenges and opportunities. Through academic exchanges, internships, and cultural immersion experiences, students develop a global mindset and a sense of responsibility towards the broader international community. Student recruiters contribute to a more interconnected, peaceful, and prosperous world. As we look to the future, let us recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of student recruiters in bridging borders and building brighter futures for generations to come.
