India, Malaysia to Increase Cooperation in Field of Oil Palm & Other Sectors

Thailand’s largest oil refiner Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited Group announced that it has begun construction on the 1m barrels per day sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production unit in Thailand. The plant, first SAF production unit in Thailand, is expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2025. The plant will be operated by BSGF Company and will consist of two main units including the used oil quality improvement unit (pre-treating unit) and the fuel production unit. The company said it will source used cooking oil (UCO) from households and the business sector through the “Thod Mai Throw” project and other channels to produce SAF and sustainable naphtha oil. Earlier, Bangchak Group signed a joint venture agreement to acquire additional shares in Thanachok Vegetable Oil (2012) Company, increasing its stake in the vegetable oil producer to 45%. The joint venture is part of the strategy to manage UCO – key raw material for SAF. Prabowo Subianto has outlined his renewable energy plan with a higher mandatory blends to a 50% (B50) biodiesel fuel sourced from palm oil, and a 10% (E10) by 2029. To further revitalise palm oil industry, it is imperative that the next president introduce four coherent policies. The first is to amend those which are detrimental to the palm oil industry, notably article 110B of the Job Creation Law. Secondly, the palm oil industry should be governed in an integrated manner by a single national agency. Thirdly, the policies regarding the regulated use of palm oil for biodiesel and other purposes must be thoroughly examined and aligned with the national production to prevent disruptions of palm oil supplies for domestic and export consumptions. Lastly, to sustain palm oil production growth both through concerted efforts to increase the palm oil yield and estate expansion sustainably in the least developed provinces in Papua. A signing ceremony took place between the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF), Bank Alfalah Limited and Biowaste Energy Ventures Limited (BEVL). It is a significant stride towards sustainability and socio-economic development in Sindh, which aims to provide subsidized financing to Biowaste Energy Ventures Limited (BEVL) for establishing the first Biogas plant in Gadap, Sindh.   This pioneering project, with a capacity of up to 35,000 M3, is set to transform methane from cattle manure and agricultural waste into biogas for fuel and organic fertilizer as a by-product. It's a key initiative in combating climate change, considering methane's high global warming potential. This Project is also backed by international organizations such as USAID, UNIDO, PFAN, and REEEP, emphasizing the global importance of renewable energy solutions. FPDA are on track to deliver 50 bulb onion "solar dryers" to farming communities nationwide at a cost of K1 million, invested by BAT. What are "solar dryers"? A facility that traps sunlight and acts like an oven to remove moisture from the outer layer of bulb onions. Why is this important? The outer layer contains the freshness of the produce and increases it's shelf life. Farmers are able to store and sell in bulk at their convenience while also able to compete with imports of the same quality. There are other factors which are also important in the value chain such as timely access to seedlings, irrigation during dry season, financial literacy, farmer training. Agriculture has been overly focused on commercialization of cash crops such as coffee. I would make a point that the commercialization of fresh produce like bulb onion is more important. This is because it addresses national food security, import substitution and since it is meeting domestic demand is not subject to volatile global market prices.
