Pleased to re-share my published research article on area "𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬' 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" in peer-reviewed journal "𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠" [ABDC: A, SCI, Q1, IF= 7.9]; co-authored with Akhilesh Kumar, PhD Rail freight operations are crucial for a nation's economic growth due to their cost-efficient services. The national rail plan in India has set a target to raise the current 27% share of freight traffic to 45% by the year 2030. However, private rail freight operators face government regulatory complexities. To overcome these challenges, freight operators must establish unified operational models for guiding strategic decisions and policies. This research examines the impact of private investment in railroads on enhancing economic freight services, specifically focusing on optimizing fleet planning for maximum revenue generation by rail freight operators. Observed the 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 trend? Till 1990s = ~𝟭𝟳 𝗞𝗺/𝗵𝗿 Between 1991 - 2020 = ~𝟮𝟯 𝗞𝗺/𝗵𝗿 | 𝗨𝗽 𝟯𝟱% 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟬𝘀 2021 - present = ~𝟰𝟬 𝗸𝗺/𝗵𝗿 | 𝗨𝗽 𝟳𝟰% 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲 #indianrailways is setting stage to think #new #logistics #design It is now better compared to average road freight speed in India, which is still at ~35 𝘒𝘮/𝘩𝘳 (12.5% 𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴) at an aggregate average. This holds immense untapped potential to achieve the logistics efficiencies at national scale. The logical and desirable modal shift can bring the lower cost from both the #inventory and #transportation #costs How this impacts your #inventorymanagement and #logistics design? - The lower and relatively reliable lead time helps #manufacturingindustry to operate with lower inventory and improving the cash-conversion-cycles and freeing up the CAPEx for expansions and capacity building. - The schemes like food security and public distribution can achieve lower freight and warehousing subsidies to make the budgets available for larger good and initiatives. - Railways freight yield on an average is ~1.60 Rs/T-kms which is ~56% lower compared to average road freight yield of ~3.60 Rs/T-kms, hence a right and balanced modal shift will reduce transportation and inventory costs along with lower CO2 emissions. So what are the key gaps the ecosystem need to address? - for #supplychain #leaders , be bold in (RE)Thinking logistics and SCM design and experiment to improve and scale. #transformingforgood one node at a time. - for #policy makers and #indianrailways to aggressively look at technology immersion, data sharing and democratising the railway #freight booking irrespective of size and volumes to achieve penetration and load shift from road. - Industry body like #cii , #nasscom , #assocham etc. to build awareness and capability through skills and stakeholder dialogue to enable confidence and collaborations. Kudos to Jaya Varma Sinha and team for achieving this! So, #india is changing gears - Are you?
