Have you heard about effective or apparent sound absorption? It apparently (pun intended) still confuses acousticians at conferences. 🤔 Some materials are so light that they become transparent to sound. If we imagine this material as applied as a boundary layer between the inside of the room and the atmosphere, this transparency could be regarded as absorbed from a room acoustic point of view. Even if the material in question does not convert a significant amount of energy to heat. ♨️ This is exactly what happens in the case of ETFE cushions and membranes in the low frequency range. But how does it influence the room acoustic conditions. My presentation at Forum Acusticum 2023 in Torino today was about the listening test that I conducted earlier this year to uncover some perceptual effects of ETFE cushions in virtual (but realistic) conditions. ETFE cushions enable a significantly lower reverberation time in the low to mid frequencies in shopping malls, atria, etc. More research is needed to study the precise impact on psychoacoustic parameters but the difference between ETFE and glass applied to the ceiling of a room is significantly discernable. What is Hydroxyl? Art restoration is an intricate blend of science and art. Among the innovative techniques emerging in this field is the use of hydroxyl radicals, which have shown promise in addressing various restoration challenges. Hydroxyl radicals are highly reactive molecules formed when ultraviolet rays interact with water vapor. These radicals have been studied for their ability to decompose harmful compounds through hydrogen abstraction, initiating a chain reaction that breaks down pollutants and odors. Historically, hydroxyls have been used in environmental applications, such as air purification and odor removal, due to their powerful oxidizing properties. Application in Art Restoration Hydroxyl radicals are now being explored for art restoration, particularly for treating blanching in easel paintings and protecting stone artworks. Blanching, a common issue caused by moisture, results in a whitish veil that obscures the painting's original colors. Traditional methods to address blanching, like solvent treatments, often fall short in providing lasting solutions. Recent research has focused on partially perfluorinated compounds with hydroxyl groups, which offer promising results in reducing blanching by filling the porous structures of the affected areas. These compounds not only enhance water repellency but also improve adhesion to the stone and paint layers, making them effective and environmentally friendly restoration agents.  The integration of hydroxyl radicals into art restoration represents a significant advancement, combining historical knowledge with cutting-edge science. "Unraveling the Beauty of Highway Scenery: A Journey into Aesthetic Measurement”. Ever pondered how we gauge the beauty of landscapes along highways? Researchers have pioneered the concept of "visual attraction intensity" to capture this elusive quality, drawing from cutting-edge multimodal neuroscientific methodologies. Their groundbreaking experiment scrutinized 30 landscape elements across three distinct highway scenes: mountainous, plains, and elevated landscapes. Leveraging state-of-the-art neuroscientific tools like our #VersatileEEG and #VersatileBio, they recorded #eyetracking, #EEG, #EDA, and #ECG data.  Their findings lead to fascinating insights: highway planning alignment shifts, abundant green vistas, and open spaces positively influence landscape preference scores. Furthermore, they uncovered a significant correlation between greenery and openness, revealing that richer landscape elements—mountains, trees, and water bodies—heighten visual allure.
